Chief Administrator
Adult Reconstruction Joint Replacement and Pediatrics
Full-Time

Position Summary:

The position of Chief Administrator, Adult Reconstruction Joint Replacement (ARJR) and Pediatrics offers an extraordinary opportunity to be an integral leader of this world class, groundbreaking institution, working collaboratively with the Chiefs of ARJR and Pediatric Orthopedics to establish and achieve administrative, clinical, research and educational goals and to manage and coordinate complex service operations. This is a multidimensional role driving improved performance in the midst of a changing market and evolving physician models.

The Chief Administrator reports to the Vice President, Service Lines with dotted line responsibility to the Chiefs of ARJR and Pediatric Orthopedics. This role will have regular interaction with the Chiefs as well as 49 physicians (38 ARJR surgeons and 11 Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeons). The position directly supervises a Director, Senior Manager, Academic Coordinator, Program Manager, two Research Directors, an Assistant Director of Data Management and Operations, as well as dotted line reporting for two Nurse Practitioner Administrators.

The Service Lines Department is focused on supporting the medical leadership of these Services collaboratively defining strategy and executing on operational initiatives to support strategic goals. To that end, the Chief Administrator will serve as a key leader of each Department and help manage initiatives which affect the respective Service Lines.

Responsibilities / Capabilities

Strategy
  • Develop a deep understanding of HSS and the complexity of the institution’s physician model and in collaboration with the Vice President and Chiefs, explore a range of structural and organizational options to create the vision and strategic plan for the divisions.
  • Work closely with the Chiefs, Surgeon-in-Chief, VP, and Chief Operating Officer to develop and implement a Service physician recruitment plan to accommodate the growing demand for services while meeting the needs of physicians for clinical activity and clinical research.
  • Facilitate the establishment of annual Service Goals in administrative/ business, clinical, research and education areas.
  • Effectively communicate a vision for the ARJR and Pediatric Orthopedics cultivating strong relationships and working confidently with staff at all levels of the organization to create an environment rooted in partnership and collaboration.
  • Partner with Service Chief to ensure service alignment and connectedness across all regional and national markets including Stamford, Connecticut and West Palm Beach, and Naples, Florida.
  • Assess the governance structure and work with service leadership to put in place enhancements that will ensure the achievement of service goals.
Operations
  • Develop and manage budgets and oversee revenue streams, seeking economies of scale that will ensure the continued success of the services.
  • Work collaboratively with counterparts at Weill Cornell and NYP on Pediatric Orthopedics Trauma call coverage and additional medical services (i.e. Pediatric Infectious Disease, Pediatric Medicine, Pediatric Physiatry)
  • Create and maintain a highly effective and efficient infrastructure through the use of best practices and a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Establish and maintain processes to improve patient care, increase efficiency and ease the burden on physicians’ office staff through programs such as implementation of various patient access initiatives, centralization of insurance prior authorization for medications, pre-surgical screening centralized scheduling, and representation of Service providers at our locations across the tri-state area.
  • Serve as the division’s liaison to the hospital to help streamline the patient experience, manage patient throughput more efficiently and support the full continuum of care.
  • Work collaboratively with physicians to evaluate opportunities for practice growth and support implementation of recommended strategies.
  • Assist physicians in understanding and managing costs to ensure they are being properly compensated for procedures.
  • Continue efforts to reduce length of stay and facilitate preparedness for transitioning joint replacements to ASCs from both a business and clinical perspective.
  • Working closely with the Chiefs to ensure that operations are consistent with the overall clinical and academic service goals and support the individual and collective career goals of the faculty.
  • Partner with OR leadership on OR efficiency, optimization, and cost reduction efforts
  • Work closely with the Project Development, Planning, Design and Construction Department on renovation/relocation projects and new construction to support the growing needs of the Services, ensuring that new space is created to support the vision and goals of the Services.
Physician Partnership & Engagement
  • Provide strategic direction as an active member of the Service Line committees on Patient Care and Experience, Clinical Research, Business, Innovation, Education, and other committees as needed to represent the needs of each Service.
  • Build and maintain allegiances with service chiefs and physicians. Be willing to be viewed as their champion while maintaining a focus on the efficiency and effectiveness of the Service Line.
  • As the ARJR and Pediatric Service Line’s liaison to the organization, work with physicians, Nursing, Finance, Marketing and Public Relations, Development and other departments to provide resources and information about the division as needed.
  • Support service level business development including oversight of HSS/Zimmer Biomet Innovation Center for Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Robotic Joint Replacement.
  • Build rapport and instill confidence with the Vice President, Chiefs, physicians, senior leadership, and staff throughout the organization.

Qualifications:
Requirements
  • Ability to model the basic values and principles of Hospital for Special Surgery
  • Highly developed critical thinking skills with the ability to find creative and innovative solutions to complex problems and issues
  • High emotional intelligence and ability to collaborate with both clinical and administrative stakeholders
  • An entrepreneurial spirit and a sense of humor
  • Strong proficiency in MS Office
  • Superior written and oral communication skills with the ability to exude confidence and credibility when interacting with people internally and externally on behalf of HSS
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with tight deadlines in an environment of constant change with a continuous improvement mindset
  • 7+ years of work experience in healthcare, consulting, or a related field. Consulting experience is highly preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively provide strategic direction and implement creative strategies in a solidly matrixed, complex organizational environment that is both consensus- and mission-driven
  • Bachelor’s Degree required. Master’s degree preferred
