POSITION SUMMARY: The Business Intelligence Analyst is part of a team that researches and investigates business problems through quantitative analysis using healthcare cost and utilization data. This position also conducts the on-going presentation of analysis results and findings to support healthcare business operations, performance and improvement. The reporting team for this position has a focus on developing a variety of reporting tools to support the work that is performed by the MHM Management team. There are also a variety of reporting tools that are developed to support a variety of MHM initiatives, state and regulatory compliance measures outcomes, and periodic client specific performance measures/outcomes.


Essential Duties:

  • Maintains high data quality and data integrity.
  • Supports and encourages others to support the Mission, Core, Values and Goals of Methodist Healthcare Ministries
  • Responsible for tasks associated with being a SQL Server Developer, and Reporting Services developer as needed.
  • Develops data visualizations using Tableau Software
  • Analyze benchmarking data, reports, processes, and measurements for key managed care indicators.
  • Employs best database development knowledge to address performance, scalability and efficiency issues with large data warehouse databases as needed.
  • Assist in making decisions of considerable impact and consequences involving healthcare expense trends
  • Utilize and adapt data to other BI tools for visualization, analytics, and presentation
  • Use statistical techniques on large datasets to analyze patient behavior, engagement, retention, and impact of special studies and pilots.
  • Train junior developers to get up-to-speed with SQL query writing and SSIS package creation when applicable.
  • Evaluate and prioritize data changes and enhancements
  • Forecast costs and utilization trends using healthcare data.
  • Works closely with MHM team members and external partners as needed to display continuous service and support.
  • Assess existing operational processes and make recommendation for improving efficiency of the processes.
  • Analyze health care services data and external data sets to create predictive methodologies to gain insights.
  • Communicate findings to business partners.
  • Develop/document business, analysis and reporting requirements
  • Develop innovative approaches to achieve deliverables
  • Responds to and solves technical problems.
  • Research, retrieve, design and deliver organized analytics and reporting of healthcare and related data
  • Designs and reviews logical and physical databases relative to how data is stored in terms of physical characteristics such as location, amount of space, and access method when applicable.
  • Responsible for Reporting Services management and security when applicable.
  • Designs, develops and documents databases in SQL Server 2008/2012, along with the ETL applications required to build them as needed.
  • Responsible for logical & physical design of the database, creation of tables, views, procedures, functions, SSIS packages and other database objects as needed.
  • Create Technical documents for the newly created processes for the team’s knowledgebase
  • Works with system application developers to create and update database components.
  • Ad Hoc analysis
  • Performance tuning and Capacity Monitoring of production Databases when applicable.
  • Independently interpret data, facts and/or trends
  • Contributes to the technical design of databases including schema and stored procedures as needed.
  • Develop models and metrics to track key engagement measures.
  • Conduct statistical analysis to drive insights and strategic. recommendations on a wide range of enterprise data and topics.
  • Develops SQL stored procedures and functions, SSIS ETL packages, Reporting Services Web Reports and other packages to accomplish complex tasks as needed.
  • Tests and corrects errors, and refines changes to database.
  • Performs MS SQL Server 2005/2008 database development, support, and administration tasks as needed.
  • Writes database documentation including data standards, procedures and definitions for the data dictionary as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience:

Bachelor's degree required (Computer Science, Business, Mathematics, Statistics, or related area); 1-2 years of experience in a data analysis and reporting with solid analytical skills using SQL Server 2008/2012 environment. Working knowledge of business intelligence tools – Tableau Software preferred.


Language Skills:


Ability to read and interpret technical and other complex documents. Ability to write routine correspondence such as letters and memos. Ability to present information in one-on-one and group situations to internal and/or external clients. Ability to read and analyze medical documents. Fluent in English, both verbal and written.


Mathematical Skills:


Must be able to apply general mathematical concepts as they relate to such tasks as, process optimization, determination of test reliability and validity, statistical analysis, correlation techniques, and cost analysis.


Reasoning Ability:

Must be able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions written, oral, diagrams or schedule form.


Computer Skills:

Intermediate ability to operate computers and software programs including SQL Server Management Studio, SQL Server Reporting Services, Windows, Visual Studio. Proficient in MS Office products with an intermediate or better proficiency with MS Excel (pivot tables, lookups, etc.). Working knowledge of electronic practice management and electronic health records systems and processes. Must have an intermediate or better proficiency with MS Excel (pivot tables, lookups, etc.).


Must have an intermediate or better proficiency with SQL (writing queries, troubleshooting queries, etc.). Working knowledge of Python and R desired.
