Essential Job Functions:
A Fleet Apprentice must exhibit a willingness to learn and develop their skillset by being exposed to and performing work within a municipal fleet maintenance shop. The Apprentice will assist with work performed in the shop including preventative maintenance and some repair work. The Apprentice will learn to perform a variety of repairs associated with a municipal fleet, and perform certain repairs solo under guidance of more experienced mechanics. The broad spectrum of equipment ranges from lawn maintenance equipment, off road construction equipment, heavy duty refuse trucks, fire trucks, and police pursuit vehicles, as well as transportation vehicles such as pick-ups and sedans. Repairs will be performed utilizing a variety of hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment. Being a complex fleet, the individual will have an opportunity to interact with a range of specialized computer diagnostic tools. The individual will learn to remove and replace a variety of parts; use chemicals and solvents to clean parts and equipment; adjust equipment to established specifications; and troubleshoot and repair brakes, driveline, air conditioning, and hydraulics systems, etc. The Apprentice will physically remove, dismount, and mount tires of all sizes. The Apprentice will maintain accurate records and reports (digital and written) related to the maintenance and repair of equipment and vehicles; and complete written/digital work orders on job assignments listing actual work performed. This is not intended to be an all-inclusive listing of essential job functions; the performance of other essential functions may be required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Must have the drive to learn new skills and techniques required for a career in fleet maintenance.
- Must have good interpersonal skills and a basic understanding of job safety in an automotive maintenance shop; and the ability to lift heavy metal parts and components.
- Dexterity and coordination sufficient to balance and guide heavy items such as truck tires, rims, and large hydraulic components.
- Skill in the use and care of hand and power tools and equipment; and in operating a motor vehicle.
- Ability to work under hot weather conditions; think critically and perform diagnostic work; complete written logs of repairs and maintenance conducted; and to follow oral and written instructions.
Minimum Education & Experience:
- An equivalent combination of training and experience that is determined to be directly related to the foregoing specific requirements may be substituted.
- Graduation from a vocational/technical school with study in a related field preferred.
- Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
Special Requirements:
- Possession of a valid Florida drivers’ license and a good driving record as determined by the City of Winter Haven.
- Possession of a tool cabinet and hand tools through 1 1/4” plus the metric equivalent drive sockets and impact sockets, etc.
- Absence of non‑prescribed controlled substances in the applicant’s system as verified through a screening process administered by a laboratory approved by the City of Winter Haven.
Physical / Environmental Factors:
- Must have the physical ability, strength, and agility to perform the essential job functions of the work environment; the ability to walk on uneven surfaces, bend, stoop, twist, push, and stand for long periods of time; and the ability to climb stairs and ladders and carry and/or lift materials and tools that may be needed to perform the assigned task.

- Work involves difficult working positions and movements of objects weighing up to 95 pounds.
*$1,000.00 after completion of six month probationary period; $1,000.00 after completion of first year.
