Job Description
The Role:
The Infectious Disease team at Moderna is looking for a highly motivated, creative leader, interested in guiding projects from inception to completion. The PM will focus on application and development of novel immunological programs, working closely with Moderna’s immunology team to address mechanism of mRNA vaccine action and questions related to durability, immune programming, immune functionality, mucosal immunity, assay development, and more. The individual will help lead a cross- functional team, managing and inspiring both internal and external collaboration, and help develop each project’s goals, objectives, deliverables, timelines, and ensure that all the team members are accountable for bringing a project to fruition. This exciting role will fall into the Infectious Diseases Research Immunology’s growing management team – driving a rapidly growing and perpetually evolving portfolio including projects from discovery to early development. As a program manager, you will play a critical role in shaping strategy, facilitating communication, driving execution, and managing change within a high paced and product-focused environment. The candidate’s contributions will be essential to accelerating the delivery of novel mRNA medicines to transform the lives of patients.
This position reports into the Director, Portfolio Strategy & Operations, and is based in Cambridge, MA.
Here’s What You’ll Do:
  • Implement a strategic and team communication plan that meets the unique needs of each research effort, enables agile decision making, and maintains alignment of work plan and strategy
  • Partner with Research and Program leaders and cross-functional stakeholders to define strategic objectives and maintain integrated research plans to ensure work resourced and executed against an aligned strategy
  • Apply scientific knowledge to critically review data, present results, and influence the strategy
  • Support budget planning and forecasting processes, making significant contributions to development of the annual program level budget
  • Organize a data management strategy to ensure all relevant documents, data and deliverables are accessible to the team for review, discussion and decision making
  • Generate presentations, as needed, to support program leads in the preparation of communications to internal leadership and governance
  • Own timelines to ensure efficient progression and interdependent activities, appropriately escalating changes to the plan and timelines for visibility and realignment
  • Coordinate with cross-functional workstream leaders to ensure team delivery by enabling communication, collaboration, and decision-making
  • Monitor progress, identify and mitigating risk, resolve issues, and ensure deliverables and milestones are achieved for assigned programs and initiatives
  • Propose and lead initiatives to increase efficiency, improve communication, and facilitate collaboration
  • Work with ID Research Operations to facilitate operational deliverables, including contracts, shipping, and other operational outputs
  • Set meeting agendas, capture meeting summaries, and follow up on action items to facilitate communication and translate decisions into action
  • Collaborates closely with research team and interfaces broadly across Research Immunology, ID Research and the larger Moderna organization to facilitate timely outcomes
  • Work cross-functionally and cross-organizationally to support preclinical research teams to drive multiple programs and initiatives forward
Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table:
  • You have at least 12 to 15 years of experience in project and program management field with a demonstrated track record of successfully driving early-stage product development programs in the research space
  • Exceptional communication skills with a strong focus on quick decision making and impactful outcomes
  • You put team before tasks by collaborating actively with all team members and supporting them
  • Experienced in leading or working within cross-functional project teams, including defining objectives and deliverables, building, and maintaining project/program plans, and resource and budget management
  • You have a strong understanding of the research life cycle that is employed across the pharma industry
  • You work independently yet engage proactively with team members, colleagues, and stakeholders to get alignment and drive projects and programs forward.

  • Experience in managing multiple concurrent internal and external collaborative programs simultaneously, including defining integrated strategic workplans to ensure effective and coordinated delivery of outcomes
  • Experience with external alliance and/or CRO management a plus
  • Knowledge of project and program management tools and timeline visualization software (e.g., MS Project, Smartsheet, etc.), Smartsheet experience is highly preferred
  • You are comfortable acting as an owner and enjoy a highly dynamic and collaborative approach to drive program success in a fast-moving research organization.
  • Master's degree in a scientific discipline required with prior experience in immunology and/or infectious diseases space in an industry setting.
  • Prior experience in a project and/or program leader role with a successful track record of delivery highly desirable
