Job Description
Tradewater

Associate Director of US Programs

Location: Chicago, Illinois

About Tradewater

Tradewater, a certified B Corporation, is in business to prevent catastrophic climate change. We are on a mission to improve the environment and create economic opportunity through the collection, control, and destruction of potent, high-impact greenhouse gases. Tradewater is a deeply mission-driven company that believes that a company committed to cleaning up the environment can be just as successful – if not more so – than a company that achieves its goals without regard to environmental impact.

To date, Tradewater has prevented more than 6.2 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent from being released into the atmosphere, a critical step in the fight against climate change. Much of this impact has come from the identification, collection, and destruction of old refrigerants that are both ozone depleting substances and potent greenhouse gases. Now, Tradewater is scaling its operations and building a global team capable of preventing more than 3 million tons of CO2e from being released to the atmosphere annually. Achieving this goal involves identifying, controlling, and destroying potent greenhouse gases around the world and building a diversified market that values the climate benefits Tradewater creates.

The Opportunity

To support its growth, Tradewater is seeking an Associate Director of US Programs to lead a team around the United States to identify and collect halocarbons – potent, non-CO2 greenhouse gases that in many cases are also ozone depleting substances – and oversee operations at Tradewater’s aggregation facilities just outside of Chicago. The work is challenging, fun, and urgent, and was featured on NPR’s Planet Money podcast:

Tradewater is based in Chicago and has team members around the world. While there is a strong preference for this position to be based in Chicago, applicants in the United States but outside the Chicago area may be considered. The position will report to the Director of US Programs, based in Chicago.

Application materials for this position will be accepted through September 5, 2023.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Direct and support activities of the US Halocarbons team to maximize performance, reaching and exceeding operational targets.
  • Work closely with the Department of Verification and Logistics to ensure that projects fully comply with all carbon offset protocol requirements and to ensure the timely delivery of offset credits after halocarbon destruction.
  • Develop and implement long-term and annual operating plans aligned with business objectives.
  • Design and implement policies and procedures to facilitate efficient and effective operations.
  • Support day-to-day warehouse operations, overseeing team of process technicians, warehouse associates, and managers in ensuring efficient continuity of operations, facilities management, logistics, customer services, and accurate halocarbon laboratory analyses.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance across key programs, including federal refrigerant reclamation reporting and various safety reports.
  • Provide support for team member growth and development through ongoing leadership of a sizable team of direct-report managers and their teams.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of Tradewater’s halocarbon procurement process across the United States. Anticipate or spot barriers to success or program weaknesses and problem solve around those issues.
  • Implement the organization’s purchasing strategy through direct engagement of negotiations with vendors, partners, and other outside parties on larger transactions and exercise approval authority over purchase agreements and other contracts.
  • Provide strategic vision and overall leadership for the Tradewater: Refrigerant Solutions program. This program is focused on partnering with organizations that own or control facilities to ensure responsible destruction of refrigerant and fire suppressant halons at end of life. This position will set the strategy for the program, play a key role in pipeline development, cultivate relationships, and oversee halocarbon collection and destruction operations for each partner organization.
  • Define, measure, and report to the Director of US Programs, CEO, and COO on key performance metrics for the US Halocarbon Program.
  • Utilize current information to strategically plan by researching and reviewing potential opportunities, developing execution plans, and building the team to action the plan. Continuously monitor and evaluate progress and make recommendations on adjustments needed.
  • Participate in company management as part of the leadership team.
  • Develop and enable the integration of best practices across the procurement organization, ensuring the best use of effective sourcing and supply chain tools, techniques and processes.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure optimal program performance.

Requirements:

  • Ability to quickly grasp and master complex and technical material.
  • Fascinated by the challenge of scaling a successful program and optimizing team performance.
  • Experience being accountable – and holding teammates accountable - for outcomes and demonstrating success across key indicators and operational targets.
  • Demonstrated track record of staff capacity-building and development to deliver consistent and reliable performance of a diverse and geographically dispersed team.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree and least 10-12 years of relevant work experience in project management, process management, logistics, operations, or similar fields.
  • Experience developing economic forecasts and budget management.
  • Passion for environmental sustainability and mission to fight climate change.
