Job Description

This position is located in the Strategic Management Unit of the Office of the Special Adviser on Africa. The Office of the Special Adviser on Africa is responsible for providing integrated advice, promoting coherence, monitoring the implementation of commitments and coordinating global advocacy in support of Africa’s development. Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Associate Data Analyst will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Track and report on progress regarding department specific data initiatives, in particular by ensuring clarity, coherence, and persuasiveness of arguments and recommendations are well-supported by the data, analysis and visualizations, within the framework of OSAA’s data quality control initiative.
  • Acquire and clean data from primary or secondary sources to support other teams in research and data analysis and maintain databases/data systems to pinpoint issues and policy recommendations targeting the intended audience.
  • Develop reports, dashboards or other tools to effectively summarize findings and convey information to management
  • Identify, analyze, and interpret trends or patterns, using basic machine learning techniques, statistical methods to identify relevant features and variables in structured sources of information and data to support the development of policy recommendations
  • Implement databases, data collection systems, data analytics and other strategies that optimize statistical efficiency and quality
  • Develop process improvement mechanisms for data analytics tasks enabling the monitoring of progress related to commitments made towards African member states.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in computer science, data science, analytics, statistics, information management, public administration, management or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of three years of experience in applied analytics, business intelligence, information management, statistics, project management, stakeholder management or related area is required.
No experience is required for candidates who have passed the United Nations Young Professionals Programme examination (YPP) or the G to P Examination (G to P).
Experience in using data to advance decisions, strategies and execution is required.
Experience with self-service analytics and data visualization applications (MS PowerBI, Qlik, Tableau or similar), or business intelligence tools (SAP Business Objects, etc.) is required.
Experience in research methodology and identifying trends, patterns, and relationships in the data that address research questions or support hypotheses is required.
Experience with database or programming languages (SQL, Python, R) is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position(s) advertised, fluency in English is required; and knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice
• This position is temporarily available starting as soon as possible until 30 April 2024, with a possibility of extension. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.
  • The appointment or assignment and renewal thereof are subject to the availability of the post or funds, budgetary approval or extension of the mandate.

United Nations Considerations
