Job Description
Position Summary

Located at Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport the Assistant Manager, Fleet Services is responsible for the maintenance/repair service provided for approximately 600 pieces of rolling stock and various pieces of equipment used at Minneapolis -St. Paul International Airport.

Under the direction of the Manager, Field Maintenance/Fleet, responsible for assigning and supervising the work of MAC mechanics, parts room technicians, equipment service workers, machinist/welders, and occasionally, field maintenance personnel. Familiar with all phases of mechanical work performed on MAC vehicles. Directs and supervises skilled mechanical work on automotive equipment, including but not limited to trucks, snowplows, sanders, sweepers, mowers, police vehicles, airport rescue and firefighting (ARFF) equipment, and miscellaneous airport equipment. Supervises the maintenance and overhaul of: diesel and gasoline engines, chassis units, electrical, ignition, fuel, exhaust, cooling, lubricating and hydraulic systems for fleet shop.

Current Shifts:

  • Sunday - Thursday 10:00 p.m. - 6:30 a.m.
  • Monday - Friday 6:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Position Description

ACCOUNTABILITIES AND FUNCTIONS
Supervision of Department Employees


  • Provide timely performance feedback to employees.
  • Conduct regularly scheduled meetings with employees to communicate work plans, issues, and other appropriate information.
  • Communicate clear performance expectations and standards to employees
  • Supervise Field Maintenance – Shop employees; trains, evaluate and discipline employees.
  • Ensure all repair work performed in shop for completeness including physical inspections and possible road tests before vehicle is returned to user departments.
  • Exercise supervisory authority in accordance with MAC Human Resources Policies, MAC Administrative Policies, and/or appropriate bargaining labor unit agreements.
  • Complete employee performance reviews and conduct performance review discussions.
JOB DUTIES
Administrative Duties
  • Coordinate repairs and upgrades for the 800 MHz and FAA radios.
  • Monitor warranty and Recall documentation of all equipment
  • Coordinate annual inspection for VMAT GPS vehicles.
  • Appraise accident damage of vehicles/ equipment for possible operator DOT drug test.
  • Schedule repairs with body shop to get accident damage fixed.
  • Assist in maintaining department compliance with MAC Policies & Procedures.
  • Research & evaluate new technology, materials, tools, procedures/practices, and equipment for fleet
  • Work with State Insurance Appraiser with related accident claims.
  • Assist with the acquisition and up-fitting process, facilitates delivery and in-service schedule for MAC departments including assembly, pre-delivery inspections, final delivery inspection and user/mechanic training.
  • Assist Managers in budget preparation for purchase/ lease of maintenance equipment and vehicles
  • Examine and complete reports on vehicles/equipment repaired
  • Coordinate and provide assistance to Reliever Mechanics.
Snow and Ice Removal
  • Assign Shop personnel to equipment repairs as appropriate.
  • Determine Shop complement and initiates crew call-backs.
  • Monitor inventory for cutting edges and broom brushes replacement.
  • Maintain the knowledge and ability to operate all vehicles in the Field Maintenance snow removal fleet.
  • During snow event, escort deliveries of E-36 deicing fluid and fuel.
  • Monitor, report, and eliminate unsafe conditions.
Directs repairs and overhaul of gasoline and diesel engines
  • Supervise the removal and replacement of engines on automotive equipment
  • Supervise acetylene and arc welding
  • Assign and supervise all phases of MAC vehicle maintenance
  • Supervise the inspection, adjustment, repair, and/or replacement of parts, including valves, pistons, and main bearing assemblies
  • Supervise and assists with related machine work
Supervises removal and overhaul of chassis units, including but not limited to:
  • Front and rear axle
  • Transmission
  • Differential
  • Brake system
Supervises and inspects the adjustment and repair of systems such as:
  • Cooling system
  • Lubricating system
  • Hydraulic system
  • Exhaust system
  • Fuel system
General Maintenance and Training
  • Coordinate work orders with MAC Facilities related to Field Maintenance building problems
  • Attend meetings as directed by the Field Maintenance Manager and maintains communication channels upward and downward in the organization
  • Instruct employees in departmental standard operating procedures and programs
  • Assist other areas as directed by the Assistant Director, Asset Management and the Field Maintenance Manager, Fleet
  • Coordinate with the MAC Safety and Environmental departments to ensure adherence to all legal requirements
  • Instruct department employees in operation of all vehicles in the Field Maintenance fleet
  • Monitor the Hazard Waste usage in the Shop for Environment Department.
  • Serve the public, maintain operational safety, maintain airport aesthetics and appearance, and operate in a cost-effective and fiscally responsible manner.
Supervise the repair and overhaul of mechanical attachments to automotive equipment such as:
  • Police vehicles
  • Sweeper attachments
  • Sanding equipment
  • Firefighting and crash rescue equipment
  • Mowers
  • Snowplows
Miscellaneous
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Coordinate annual inspections of Fire Department ARFF Crash Vehicles, Engine Pumper Trucks, and DOT Licenses for Field Maintenance Vehicles, Runway Friction Testers.
  • Monitor and assign E1 Work Orders for the Weld Shop.
  • Approve the purchases of equipment, parts, and miscellaneous materials with Field Maintenance Managers
  • Renewal and update software subscriptions of Shop laptops.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Trade School Certification or equivalent education
  • Basic skill level using Microsoft Word and Outlook.
  • Valid MSP AOA-runway/taxiway driver’s license or able to obtain the license within 30 days of offer of employment.
  • Extensive knowledge of airport field maintenance vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance procedures OR 3 three years of supervisory experience as a shop supervisor, service manager, mechanic supervisor or similar.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a wide variety of people.
  • Experience with documentation, scheduling, and correspondence.
  • Ability to read and interpret hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical schematic drawings.
  • A valid state-issued driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • 5 years of experience in skilled mechanical repair and diagnostic work including equipment described within the job description.
  • Professional knowledge of the safe operation of trucks, tools, and equipment
  • Ability to respond to emergencies or snow events during off hours
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding employee information.
DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS
  • Possession of a valid state-issued Commercial Driver’s License.
  • Experience with programs relating to fleet maintenance or inventory control.
  • Three years of supervisory experience where the primary duties included hiring, delegating, coaching, rewarding and disciplining employees
  • Post-secondary degree.
