Assistant Harbor Master

(No Benefits)

Friday – Sunday

8 – 10 hours per week

May include additional 10-20 hours of Patrol as assigned by the Harbormaster.

Hours are weather permitting.

Position Duration: May through October

$17.50 per hour

Under the direction of the Harbor Master this position is a part-time, seasonal position.

Description of Duties:

Under the direction of the Harbor Master, the staff member will be responsible for the following:

• Maintain the patrol boats and other necessary equipment;
• Performs any other duties as required and/or assigned by the Harbor Master
• Must interact with other City departments, State and Federal agencies when necessary;
• May be asked to write incident reports of any circumstance worth noting;
• Responds to and assists persons/vessels in distress;
• Must read all current bulletins published by the US Coast Guard
• Assists when necessary with other harbor duties assigned by the Harbor Master;

Minimum Qualifications:

• High School graduate and or GED;
• At least 18 years of age;
• Must be able to work for the entire duration of the job period (May-October)
• Must have at least 10 years of power boat experience and show proficiency at operating boats up to 25’ in length and 250 HP;
• Must speak , write and comprehend English;

Preferred Qualifications:

• Interpret data and prepare reports;
• Knowledge and experience in the operation of marine related equipment and vessels;
• Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public and other City departments;
• Must be in good physical condition and able to respond to emergency situations
• Must be able to swim;

Physical demands of the Job:

• Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds;
• Must be able to climb a ladder into and out of a boat;
• Must have the ability to tread water;
• Must be able to toss a life ring to struggling swimmers or other boaters on deck;
• Must be able to maintain balance when boat encounters choppy water conditions;
