The Assistant Exhibition Designer has the opportunity to participate in the creative process of exhibition design for the museums’ dynamic program of art presentations-Under the supervision of the Head of 3-D Design, and as a member of the exhibition design and media team, the Assistant Exhibition Designer will be responsible for helping the design team develop innovative and engaging installation and exhibition components and systems, providing access to art for all. This role supports the creative process within the design team, which works collaboratively and closely across the institution, to represent exhibitions narratives, themes, and expressive modes, to determine the procedures, methods, materials, installation and display techniques for the correct and safe presentation of works of art.
The Assistant Exhibition Designer participates directly in the exhibitions process by helping the design team develop sustainable and engaging design solutions to challenging problems, sharing concepts with the design team, producing models, prototypes, plans, and multiple types of design deliverables. The Assistant Exhibition Designer will help the Head of Exhibition Design facilitate the timely design, production, and installation of exhibition components in galleries and other museum spaces. The duties of this position require intense teamwork and collaboration, and the ideal candidate is creative, communicative, flexible, organized, and an excellent problem solver.
Position’s Principal Responsibilities
  • Participates in spacing meetings, brainstorms, charrettes, reviews, and other collaborative creative sessions.
  • Coordinates with preparators, protection services, facilities, and others, for the delivery, reception, installation, storage or demolition of fabricated casework and scenic components.
  • Helps keep display systems storage and inventories up to date.
  • Assists in the creation of designs and plans to facilitate the regular rotation of collection objects and for other projects as needed.
  • Works collaboratively and gets design direction from the Head of Exhibition Design and the curatorial team in the creation of exhibitions, from concept to implementation. Helps prepare plans for the presentation of works of art and interpretive elements with the primary goal of creating an engaging journey for the visitor, carefully considering accessibility, and engagement.
  • Generates, collects, and organizes the appropriate design documents for each phase of a project, and maintains organized records. Accommodates and tracks changes to designs. Ensures revisions are shared with the appropriate parties.
  • Uses CAD and other software to produce 2D and 3D models and drawings, scaled floor plans, elevations, layouts, detailed construction drawings, and installation drawings for all kinds of art objects, exhibition components, spaces, walls, casework, media and graphic interpretive elements.
  • Communicates verbally, in writing and through drawings with contractors and fabricators, to contribute to the elaboration of project budgets, to get estimates and to submit production orders.
  • Assists in the development of high-quality and sustainable exhibition and display systems that meet the museum’s experiential and aesthetic goals, while optimizing resources and reducing waste.
  • Assists in the creation of concept sketches, prototypes, mock-up models and drawings, offering a variety of solutions, either by hand sketching, or by digital means. `1`1
Additional Responsibilities
  • Attends regular project meetings, team meetings, and others as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Consults with facilities, trails and grounds, guest, and protection services teams to solicit input, obtain buy-in and ensure best outcomes for guests and the museum.
Minimum Qualifications
Education, Training and Traits
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment required.
  • Experience in Adobe Photoshop, and Microsoft Office is required.
  • Demonstrated planning, organizational, problem-solving and collaboration skills required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a team setting through sketches, renderings, models, and other forms of representation required.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, professionally, and effectively, verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of the requirements for guests with disabilities and familiarity with the principles and benefits of Universal Design is preferred.
  • Additional education and/or experience in exhibition design, theater design, museum studies or related areas are a plus, but not required.
  • Knowledge of principles, techniques and best practices of exhibition design, lighting design, graphic design, or multi-media technology is strongly preferred.
  • Keeps abreast of trends and technologies. Experience in incorporating multi-media into exhibitions preferred.
  • Experience in design planning and implementation processes is required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in architecture, industrial design, interior design, art, or related field from an accredited college or university, or commensurate work experience, is required.
  • Proficiency in a drafting program like AutoCAD or equivalent (Vectorworks) is required., Proficiency in a 3D modeling / rendering program like SketchUp, or equivalent (Rhino, Blender, Twinmotion) is required.
  • Self-directed and highly organized; ability to prioritize balance the demands of a fast-paced working environment with multiple overlapping projects and deadlines.
Work Experience
  • Previous work or internship experience in galleries or museums, in preparation, production, or design, is strongly preferred but not required.

  • Physical demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to travel independently within museum office and gallery spaces, construction sites and grounds. In the work environments described below, position requires verbal and written conversation with others, sitting, moving throughout the museum, trails, and associated buildings, reaching, lifting/moving objects up to 30 pounds, and use of hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. The position requires the ability to focus and work at a computer for long periods of time, listening, analyzing and summarizing large quantities of information. Vision abilities required by the job include close vision and the ability to discern nuances of measurements, accuracy of detailed drawings, and nuances of color, and lighting.
  • Work Environment: Work will be performed in an office environment, interior and exterior museum spaces and grounds, and construction sites. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the office work environment is usually low to moderate. The noise level on construction sites can be medium to high.
