About Flatpage:
Flatpage is an editorial agency and publishing house that specializes in delivering top-quality editing to academics, nonfiction authors, nonprofits, and companies and publishing books that captivate wide audiences. As a mission-driven business, Flatpage empowers authors and content creators to write engaging texts that resonate with their readers. Our team of editors, most of whom are former academics, works collaboratively to ensure every project meets the highest standards of excellence.
Position: Assistant Editor (Part-Time)
We are looking for experienced copyeditors who are passionate about refining academic and nonfiction manuscripts and have a desire to be part of a fast-growing company. As an assistant editor with Flatpage, you will focus on enhancing the clarity and effectiveness of written content while contributing to the growth of our editorial offerings. The ideal candidate should be based in the NYC area, possess excellent editorial skills, and have extensive knowledge of the editing and publishing process. We are seeking ambitious self-starters who are excited to grow with our company.
This is a part-time position, where you'll be expected to work regular weekly hours up to 30 hours per week, with the potential to develop into a full-time position. Although this role is primarily remote with flexible hours, the successful candidate will be based in the NYC area and required to attend occasional in-person meetings and work hours in NYC in the future.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with our team using a productivity platform called Basecamp, including managing projects, document handling, and participating in active discussions to ensure effective communication.
- Copyedit (and occasionally line edit) academic and nonfiction manuscripts, including books, chapters, journal articles, institutional/museum publications, and other texts by academics, artists, comms teams, and others to ensure correct grammar, mechanics, and style adherence.
Requirements:
- Exceptional communication skills
- Advanced degree (MA or PhD) in the humanities or social sciences.
- Expert-level knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style (17th ed.), and ideally at least one other guide, such as APA or AP style.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of professional copyediting experience.
- Ability to copyedit at a rate of 1,500+ words per hour.
- Enthusiasm for being part of a growing team and desire for long-term collaboration
- Certificate in copyediting from an accredited program (e.g., UCSD, UCB, UCGS, SFU, UW, etc.).
- Strong command of grammar and mechanics in US English (first-language level).
- Ability to work efficiently under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
- Technical skills in Microsoft Word's track changes and the ability to use style sheets.
Desired Skills:
- Proficiency in academic terminology and the ability to translate academic writing into reader-friendly language.
- Familiarity with academic journals, university presses, and traditional publishing industry practices.
- Knowledge of museums and cultural institutions, including the conventions of didactics and exhibition catalogues.
- Expertise in editing nonfiction manuscripts, including various genres like memoirs, instructional texts, historical accounts, etc.
Hours and Compensation:
This position requires up to 30 hours per week, depending on project volume, with opportunity for future growth. Although this position is remote from the NYC area, the person in this position may be required to attend virtual calls with our chief editor during working hours, primarily in the morning EST. Occasional in-person meetings/hours in NYC will be possible in the future. The starting rate of compensation is $30 per hour.
How to Apply:
If you believe you are a perfect fit for this role and have the skills and qualifications outlined above, please submit your updated resume (2 pages max) and a cover letter addressed to Cara Jordan outlining your relevant experience to [email protected] (subject line should include the position title and your name). Successful applicants will be contacted to perform a sample edit, followed by an interview for a start date in autumn 2023.
We look forward to reviewing your application!
