The Assistant Director of Marching & Athletic Bands serves in a key leadership role to perform a variety of instructional duties and to accomplish the goals, mission, and vision of the Marching & Athletic bands, as outlined by the Director of Bands and the Director of Marching and Athletic Bands.
This position serves as an instructor in the Marching & Athletic Band program by conducting student performances, sectional rehearsals, and full band rehearsals, as assigned by the Director of Marching and Athletic Bands; collaborates with the Director and Associate Director of Marching and Athletic Bands in developing curricula for band courses, including: the selection of music for halftime shows, athletic events, and other performances; coordinates music arranging and writing with internal and external music writing staff; contributes to the design of marching band shows, including drill writing and art and prop development; and serves as the primary organizer, and one of the principal conductors, of the Fall Athletic Band, managing the scheduling of events, assisting in travel planning, managing communication, organizing band rosters, planning rehearsals, and performing other duties essential to the operation of the Fall Athletic Band.
The Assistant Director works with the Business Operations Manager of the Marching & Athletic Bands to coordinate the logistics of the paid Pep Band program, including personnel, performance scheduling, bus scheduling, communications with prospective clients, recruiting, and rehearsing the paid Pep Band; works with the Administrative Coordinator of the Marching & Athletic Bands to administer the Guests of the Band program on football game days; assists with the organization and teaching of Marching Band summer programs, including: Summer Sessions, the Summer Clinic, the collaboration with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, and other programs as assigned; oversees the management of instrument inventory and works with the Business Operations Manager to monitor hired (non-OSU) workers in the instrument office.
Guest conducting and other duties as assigned. This position requires working flexible, non-traditional business hours and overnight travel for both Marching and Athletic Band travel.
Required Education & Experience: Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience and a master’s degree in Music Education, Conducting, or equivalent.
Desired Education & Experience: 5 years teaching experience preferred.
The pay range for this job profile is $53,800.00 - $71,700.00. The offer for this position will fall within this range based on internal equity, the unit's available budget, and the candidate's qualifications.
