Provide direct student support related to educating the campus about diversity and inclusion and also supporting underrepresented students on campus. This full-time, full-year professional position develops, plans, schedules, facilitates, promotes and evaluates educational programming related to multicultural life, diversity, equity, inclusion, social justice, access, retention, cultural awareness and community building.
Major Responsibilities
Programming and Workshops
  • Plan, schedule, assess and facilitate student, faculty and staff programs and workshops in collaboration with the administration of the Multicultural Life and Diversity Office ( MLDO ) in support of the mission of fostering a community of learners who contribute to an environment of inclusive and academic excellence based on the values of human difference and individual contribution.
  • Support Residence Life and Housing in providing training to Resident Assistants on topics related to diversity, equity and inclusion, and collaborating to provide programming for residential students in the residence halls.
Annual Diversity Conference
  • Assist in administration of the conference including the committee leadership and organizing an annual diversity conference, which is heavily attended by resident assistants and residential students.
Assessment
  • Assist with measuring the effectiveness of strategic initiatives within Student Affairs, such as co-curricular learning and student engagement. Projects vary from year to year and will include assisting with the assessment of direct student learning outcomes of MLDO programming
Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education Professional Association ( NASPA ) Undergraduate Fellows Program ( NUFP )
  • Participate in maintenance of up-to-date curriculum for NUFP
  • Assist with matching potential fellows to a mentor and their application process
  • Attend at least one professional development opportunity with fellows (this could include local or national conferences)
  • Mentor a NASPA’s NUFP fellow and coordinate the SUNY Cortland program
Public Relations and promotions
  • Train and co-supervise student Peer Diversity trainers who will also present COR 101 training
  • Prepare and present in COR 101
  • Prepare materials for and attend tabling for Welcome Week and Open House
  • Present Residential Life and Housing professional and student staff trainings
  • Attend and supervise student programming including but not limited to evening and weekend programs such as the Voice Office events, late night events, Diversity Conference, trips, meetings and events hosted by student organizations.
  • COR 101 ( SUNY Cortland’s required one-credit graded seminar for first-time college students in the SUNY Cortland academic community)
  • Edit, coordinate and implement department newsletter each semester
  • Coordinate social media initiatives and manage MLDO website
Student Interns
  • For interns that this position directly supervises: meet regularly with interns to support them and follow up on their tasks, create intern job descriptions, complete internship paperwork, and evaluate intern performance and contribution
  • Co-supervise student interns and volunteers with other administrators in MLDO
Service to Campus Community
  • Serve on committees, councils or working groups where representation of MLDO is important to help serve students of historically marginalized populations
Professional Development and Collaboration
  • Keep up on student affairs and higher education trends that relate to diversity, equity, inclusion
  • Participate in professional development seminars and workshops on and off campus
  • Within the MLDO , specific staff will take lead on projects but will work collaboratively to support one another in all that the office does.
  • Build relationships with regional and SUNY diversity offices
  • Attend professional development opportunities as resources allow
Functional and Supervisory Relationships
  • Within the MLDO , specific staff will take lead on projects but will work collaboratively to support one another in all that the office does.
  • Supervise and co-supervise interns
  • Reports to the director of Multicultural Life and Diversity Office ( MLDO ) and is expected to collaborate broadly across the institution with other offices, departments and student groups.
Required Qualifications
  • Experience working with and supporting underrepresented student populations
  • Evidence of working knowledge of various computer applications such as Microsoft products
  • Availability, ability, and willingness to work outside standard office hours, including nights and weekends, as needed.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience in program development and facilitation
Preferred Qualifications
  • Conversational fluency in a language other than English
  • Experience doing assessment of direct student learning outcomes and program evaluation
  • Experience working in higher education and student development.
  • Master’s in student affairs, cultural studies or other closely related field.
