Job Description
The Assistant Director, Academic Success will assist the Assistant Dean, Academic Success in designing and implementing academic success initiatives to provide a comprehensive and meaningful academic experience for first and second-year law students. The Assistant Director will teach courses and workshops designed to assist law students with the transition to law school and to promote success in the first and second year of law school. The Assistant Director will meet with and counsel students on their academic skills development; develop and oversee the execution of individualized learning plans; and provide one-on-one assistance for at-risk students. Finally, the Assistant Director will be responsible for hiring, training, and managing Langdell Scholars (upper-level students working with first and second-year students)
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties as assigned.
Teach law school skills-based courses to first and second-year students and those students on academic probation/risk.
Assist students with law school study strategies through one-on-one meetings.
Collaborate with first and second-year faculty members to implement academic success strategies within the curriculum.
Provide academic counseling to students seeking assistance with study techniques for law school exams.
Review students’ work product to provide analysis and feedback to help students improve legal writing skills and develop for law school exams.
Develop and present academic skills workshops for first-year students, focusing on time management, note-taking, and preparing for classes and exams.
Participate in campus-wide initiatives in collaboration with other student services offices to provide a comprehensive and meaningful academic experience for students.
Coordinate and oversee the implementation of the Langdell Scholar Program (upper-level students assisting first-year students).
Communicate with students and faculty about upcoming workshops, sessions, and other Academic Success sessions.
Comply with all aspects of the law school’s Customer Service Standards.
Supervisory Responsibilities
N/A May oversee Langdell scholars occasionally.

Must be professional and maintain the confidentiality of all department data and correspondence. Service-oriented with an ability to make all visitors feel welcome. Must be computer literate with proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), some WordPerfect with the ability to learn new programs as necessary. Must be detail-oriented and able to work in a fast-paced multi-tasking environment.
EDUCATION And/or EXPERIENCE
JD from an accredited law school. Licensed Texas lawyer in good standing with the State Bar of Texas. A minimum of four years of practice is preferred. A minimum of two years of administrative or teaching/training experience is required.
Language Skills
Proficient in both spoken and written English. Ability to interpret and explain complex data. Ability to effectively and professionally communicate in one-on-one and small group situations to students, alumni, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to perform basic to intermediate math essentials. Must possess the ability to analyze numerical data and detect patterns, errors, and trends.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define routine problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions to solve routine problems and/or deal with a variety of variables in situations, especially when the department head may be out of the office or unavailable. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision to accurately input data and proofread; distance vision to recognize and assist visitors to the department.

Extremely fast-paced, multi-tasking, non-smoking work environment. Must be able to work the general business schedule of the law school (9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.) plus occasional evenings and weekends as necessary.
