Job Description
The Random House Publishing group is seeking an Art Director to lead a small team of designers and illustrators for our illustrated books. In this role you will design, manage, develop, and oversee full-package art and design aspects of our Random House Worlds full-color illustrated books, Harmony & Rodale illustrated books, and our Christian Children’s publishing program. Working in partnership with the Creative Director and Publisher, Editor, and Production manager on every project from conception through completion, the ideal candidate will have 8 years or more experience designing full package books, trafficking and art directing freelance designers, trafficking and art directing freelance illustrators, and internal management experience.


Responsibilities include:


  • Prepare interior and exterior mechanicals from creation to final product, including: designing layouts and choosing typography, setting up templates and parent pages, style sheets, etc.
  • Maintaining familiarity with our target audience and to understand consumer needs and preferences.
  • Provides feedback during and direct (if necessary) photo shoots.
  • Commissions and directs freelance illustrators and photographers, creation of mood boards to aid in this.
  • Maintaining a current sense of design trends and the aesthetic zeitgeist and seeking out up-and-coming artists (designers, photographers, illustrators) of interest.
  • Working with the Creative Director, Publisher and Editor on finding the right artist or designer for every potential manuscript, or the right project for every artist of interest.
  • Working with our Publishers and Production Manager to advise on book formats regarding what size, shape, material, effects, etc. best suits each project and the market.
  • Art Directing and oversight of staff, assigning the design of every book, interior and package, across three imprints.
  • Overseeing trafficking of freelanced projects (design and illustration) and maintain design schedules and databases.


Qualifications:


  • Exceptional attention to detail and organization
  • Incredibly high standards of design and finished product
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • 8+ years of experience in the field of full-package book design in cookbooks, art books, and children’s books.
  • Fluency/full competency with the Adobe Creative Suite
  • Ability to manage competing priorities while adhering to deadlines
  • Ability to work collaboratively with in-house colleagues and external artists and authors


The salary range for this position is $88,000 - $120,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to company results.
