Job Overview

As an Advertising Art Director, you’ll create communications that show consumers how and why Macy’s is a “brand for me.” You’ll lead teams of designers, photographers & stylists to develop editorial, design, and photographic concepts and execution of our events and campaigns. You are an experienced designer, with expert typographic knowledge, and have your finger on the pulse of current creative industry trends. Curious, innovative, and a strong conceptual thinker, you’re constantly looking for ways to break boundaries. You thrive on collaboration and healthy debate that challenges the status quo, and inspire the teams through new and exciting work across all types of media & digital content.

Reporting to the Creative Director you’ll work primarily with partners in the Creative, Digital Experience, Marketing Activation, Comms Planning, Project Management, & Photo Studio teams.

Essential Functions

  • Plans, prioritizes and produces a high volume of work – takes ownership from start to finish.
  • Collaborates with copywriters and other creatives to develop campaign and project concepts that meet creative brief objectives.
  • Leads monthly wireframing and editorial planning.
  • Creates presentations that effectively articulate and inspire support for ideas.
  • Inspires others through an innovative approach to design, ideation & ways of working.
  • Directs crew of photographers, stylists and hair & makeup on location and in studio as required.
  • Brings energy and enthusiasm to the team through participation in celebrations, peer mentoring, volunteering and fundraising events.
  • Researches with enthusiasm to bring innovation into all solutions, from new fashion and promotional ideas to new digital content and experiences.
  • Evaluates creative briefs to ensure clarity and alignment on direction before work begins.
  • Applies knowledge of creative industry trends, always bringing new creative ideas to the table.
  • Ensures all creative work meets brand identity guidelines, reflects our customer’s diversity as well as design and fashion trends, and is grounded in an ongoing awareness of our competition.
  • Meets deadlines and proactively communicates status of projects to partners and leaders.
  • Directs casting, styling, hair & makeup direction prior to shoots.
  • Leads teams of designers on a project basis to develop editorial concepts, design concepts, and photo concepts for events and campaigns.
  • Combines a deep understanding of design systems, grids, color, typography and photography to deliver clear and powerful messages.

Qualifications and Competencies

Qualifications

  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite – XD, InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator.
  • Photo art direction experience required.
  • Works independently, quickly and iteratively.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs – Outlook, Teams, PowerPoint, Word.
  • Portfolio demonstrating design and advertising communications proficiency.
  • Proactive, detail oriented and always follows through.
  • Strong organizational, planning, prioritizing and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • We encourage candidates with either a bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in a related field to apply.
  • Retail experience preferred, but not required.

Competencies

  • You excel in content creation formats (Adobe Premiere, After Effects, Adobe Creative Suite & design templates in Canva or Google docs/suite, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, etc.).
  • Thorough understanding and passion for digital and social creative world, best practices, trends & visual storytelling across all traditional and emerging social platforms.
  • You pursue perfection in concepting, designing, developing, and putting the team in the best position to present our ideas.
  • You demonstrate expertise and interest in social media platforms and know their abilities and limitations.
  • You will collaborate with our creative and strategy teams, to create and produce videos & photography, and engaging social copy.
  • Able to manage and prioritize a wide array of tasks without compromising the general level of creative.
  • You understand the difference between a creative idea and tactical execution and are an expert at producing both.
  • You’re flexible in working both autonomously and more closely as a team when developing concepts.
  • You’re capable and responsible for conveying art direction in all mediums, everything from social posts to short form videos.
  • You have an understanding and/or ability to work with motion graphics.
  • You work to stay current with technology and trends as well as seek opportunities to improve art/design or production skills.
  • Responsible, accountable, always leading with the right attitude.
  • Ability to plan/execute live content for social media channels including Instagram Stories.
  • You are a maker at heart & you lead a project from conception to execution.
