As an Architect, you will manage and support capital design projects. You will direct, coordinate, and monitor all phases of design project management activities, and advise on project design schedules and budgets. Your work will directly affect the success of expansion at Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA) and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD).

Architect

Serves in the Design Department Office of Engineering, with offices located at Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA) or at Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD).

Works with other Architect and engineering professionals on Aviation Capital Construction Program (CCP) projects at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD). Functions include design project management, airline and tenant liaison, and contract management. Analyzes projects to improve schedules, quality assurance and quality control, cost control, progress reporting, environmental sustainability, and safety. Performs related functions.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists the Supervisory Architect and Supervisory Engineer in directing, overseeing, coordinating, and monitoring design project management activities for the terminal expansion and redevelopment program.
Assists in monitoring new designs in progress and upon completion. Ensures work performed meets Airports Authority Design Manual and Building Codes Manual requirements, industry standards, and best practices.
Assists with coordinating the submission of design progress reports.
Confers with designers on contractor-submitted items to ensure the design intent is accomplished in construction.
Reviews engineering designs and contract documents managed by others to ensure project interdependencies are coordinated so that construction activities may proceed expeditiously.
May oversee activities of consultants.
Initiates and develops plans for specific design projects. Ensures an appropriate blend of cost, aesthetics, functionality, constructability, maintainability, and sustainability.
Ensures solicitation of highly effective consultants and contractors.
Reviews and advises on engineering designs. Provides, or ensures provision of, continuing design support during construction.
Coordinates the design Architecture/Engineer (A/E) firms’ provision of construction phase services.
Serves as Contracting Officer’s Technical Representative (COTR) for specific design projects to help evaluate design and construction bids.
Maintains liaison with procurement officials before and throughout construction and to control change orders, invoicing, and project budgets.
Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Seven years of progressively responsible experience in design project management and a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture. A master’s degree may substitute for two years of experience.
One of the seven years of experience should include working with airport design projects, including planning, organizing, monitoring, and conducting quality assurance/quality control of complex design projects in support of fully integrated airport operations.
Comprehensive knowledge of and ability to apply architectural concepts, principles, and practices; building systems; and aesthetic and functional building considerations.
Knowledge of and ability to ensure compliance with key regulatory requirements (e.g., Americans with Disabilities Act [ADA] provisions on public accommodations, National Fire Protection Association [NFPA] building standards); building trades, environmental sustainability principles and generally accepted practices of the industry; design-build process and design-construction solicitation process.
Knowledge of design and construction industry management practices and the ability to ensure that project activities are within project budget and schedules.
Ability to make detailed analyses of data and information and make recommendations.
Ability to speak and write effectively.
Skill in using a computer and modern office suite software.

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED
A state driver’s license in good standing.
Licensed as a Registered Architect (RA) in any U.S State or Territory.
NECESSARY SPECIAL FACTORS
Licensure must be maintained.
Work is typically reviewed in progress and upon completion for quantity, quality, timeliness, teamwork, customer service, and other factors.
May be subject to night/weekend work.
May be subject to potential hazards common to the airport environment and construction industry including adverse weather conditions and dust/grease/dirt. Wears personal protective gear, as necessary.
A background security investigation will be required for all new hires.
