Position Summary


Characteristic Duties – Responsibilities


  • Hires, evaluates and directs the professional and support staff of the Unit.
  • Plans, directs and manages budget processes, personnel activities and other administrative functions including exercising responsibility for the management authorization of expenditures and personnel transactions of Residence Education and Housing Services.
  • Serves as a member of senior management in order to participate in the development of goals, objectives, policies and procedures for Residence Education and Housing Services.
  • Identifies needs and develops standards, procedures & priorities by participating in designing major systems.
  • Directs the preparation of University and divisional reports and documents.
  • Helps to develop and evaluate relevant KPIs and metrics to measure success.
  • Maintains currency in the field through continuous learning.
  • Leads special projects from inception to completion to drive strategic goals; helps to manage other strategic goals that the AVP has designated to other leaders.
  • Coordinates contracts and purchasing requests.

Interacts With


  • University/Professional Groups - in order to participate in activities and exchange information.
  • Deans/Directors - in order to recommend courses of action or solve problems.
  • Staff - in order to direct work, answer questions, exchange information and solve problems.
  • University Administrators - in order to coordinate REHS’s budget with the University's General Fund budget, coordinate activities, participate in problem solving and exchange information.
  • College/Department Administrators - in order to provide administrative leadership, chair meetings and exchange information.


Responsibility For The Work Of Others


May provide second level supervision over regular employees. Those positions responsible for the supervision of regular employees are identified with /S following the title.


Responsibility For The Health-safety Of Others


This position has responsibility for the health and/or safety of others. Responsibilities may include developing and implementing policies and procedures that ensure the safety of the work place.


IMPACT ON PROGRAMS – SERVICES – OPERATIONS


Errors in budget planning, allocation and projections can have serious impact on College, Department and University programs causing very large losses of time, resources and serious inconvenience to internal and external groups of people.


WORK ENVIRONMENT


Negligible disagreeable working conditions. The job requires very little physical effort.


All positions in SLE are designated as critical status. In the event of a university closure, modification, or suspension of operations due to snow or other emergency condition, persons in this position are expected to make all reasonable attempts to report to work as scheduled for the duration of the closure/suspension. If a person has an approved remote work agreement to work a portion of their normally scheduled work hours remotely, they may be called upon to work on-site to serve the MSU community.


Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills


Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Business Administration, Accounting, Management or field related to employing unit; five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in financial or accounting practices, developing research projects, funding and grant practices and/or experience in a field related to the area of employment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Desired Qualifications


  • This position requires, or will require prior to the completion of the probationary period: knowledge of basic personal computer terminology and operations, and the ability to use e-mail and the Internet.
  • May require valid vehicle operator's license where needed to perform duties of the position.
  • Other skills and/or physical abilities required to perform duties of the position.
