Job Description
NATURE OF WORK : This is a senior level professional position responsible for providing direct assistance to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), monitoring Tribal general funds, and overseeing the development, modification, and implementation of accounting systems, standards, procedures, financial controls, research and financial analysis, and the production and interpretation of financial statements and reports for the Nisqually Indian Tribe. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Ability to prepare comprehensive financial reports and summaries.
  • Ability to work successfully as part of a team and to establish and maintain effective relationships with a variety of government employees and officials, and the general public.
  • Ability to research, interpret, analyze, and explain detailed and complex financial data, legal documents, and government regulations.
  • Monitor financial status, revenue and expenditures, budgets, and provide monthly status reports to appropriate management staff.
  • Support outside auditors by preparing schedules, providing explanation of supporting materials and procedures, and preparing any other necessary data or documentation.
  • Review records and reconcile loan payments.
  • Ability to plan, lead and coordinate work and projects of a technically demanding nature, under strict deadlines, and under limited supervision. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or a closely related field from an accredited institution AND five (5) years of professional accounting or auditing experience including two (2) years of experience supervising fiscal positions OR an equivalent combination of appropriate experience and/or post-secondary education.
  • Prepare financial reports and advise management on budget and financial status, trends, and issues.
  • Ability to establish and maintain organized work methods.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal history background check.
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, bookkeeping theories and practices, and office procedures.
  • Coordinate the monthly and year-end closing of the books, review expenditures and distribute financial information.
  • Review financial activity to ensure compliance with Tribal accounting procedures and policy.

  • Ability to work with a wide range of tribal programs and projects, and Tribal leadership to provide strategic guidance regarding policies and procedures and to clarify the Tribe's accounting process.
  • Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions and technical terminology.
  • Ability to maintain and practice strict confidentiality regarding financial information, records, and other matters at all times.
  • Ability to manage financial databases and generate spreadsheets.
  • Recommend, design, and seek authorization to implement new department controls or procedure changes to improve current systems.
  • Ability to provide orientation, training, and supervision to accounting personnel.
  • Provide training for Nisqually Indian tribe staff regarding financial policies and procedures.
  • Ability and willingness to assume responsibility for accuracy and timeliness of work projects and to work independently.
  • Interpret and analyze various reports, and financial forecasting and historical data.
  • Skill in performing detailed and accurate accounting calculations.

  • Supervise and review accounts payable process.
  • Skill in the use of financial management software and systems.
  • Knowledge of federal regulations for accounting and auditing compliance.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Oversee budget compliance and advise program/project management of budget variance issues.
  • Review, reconcile, and edit Tribal financial records including cash, investment and loan accounts.
  • Perform financial analysis, and monitor accounting control policies, procedures, and practices.
