Laboratory Animal Caretaker Jobs

Collects and processes diagnostic samples. Administers drugs and other treatments. Assists Veterinarians and Principal Investigators with handling animals during procedures

Assists in training researchers and staff in animal procedures and guidelines.

Uses and maintains surgical equipment such as anesthesia machines, ventilators, cautery apparatus, suction equipment, clippers, endoscopes and monitoring devices

Performs laboratory examinations including necropsy, clinical pathology, microbiology, parasitology, PCR, ELISA, etc. under veterinary supervision

Provides information to Business Office for billing charges to principal investigators

Assists in inspecting incoming animals for shipping condition, food supply, disease symptoms; performs physical examinations. Maintains accurate records

Caretakers are expected to have good communication skills and be comfortable using email and Microsoft Word and Excel Preferred Qualifications:

Previous experience and training in animal care

Knowledge of animal care within the context of biomedical research

Previous experience in a clean room environment Physical Demands:

Animal handling, feeding and food preparation.

2.Experience with diagnostic testing such as fecal analysis, fluorescent microscopy or other testing for pathogens.

Coordinates the delivery of unique or specialized husbandry practices or services.

Sanitizes cages, pens, animal quarters, and equipment; performs minor repairs.

Under the direction of the Director and/or researchers, administers medications and/or treatments.

No prior specific work experience required.

Candidate should be able to use basic computer programs such as Internet, Microsoft Word for email, training, and basic data entry.

Must have good communication skills, both verbal and written, and be able to follow instructions from the Facility Supervisor or Veterinarian.
