POSITION DESCRIPTION:

An employee in this class performs routine animal care in the Veterinary Science program for the Community College. The incumbent is expected to perform work independently but may contact a supervisor with any problems. Does related work as required.

Operates cage washers to cleans and disinfects cages; Maintains cleanliness of the facility; Maintains animal records; Assists in the feeding, care and handling of animals; mice, rats, rabbits, dogs and cats. Observes animals for general health status and notifies the program coordinator of any observed problems; Monitors the facility for proper ventilation.


FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Some knowledge of the care and feeding of animals; some knowledge of simple tools; some knowledge of cleaning equipment and supplies; ability to learn and perform routine maintenance tasks; ability to understand and follow instructions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

One (1) year of experience and/or training in animal care and husbandry.


HIRING SALARY:

This position is eligible for medical benefits as offered by the College. Salary in accordance with Suffolk County civil service and AME contract and is non-negotiable.
