LABORATORY ANIMAL RESOURCES (IN-LARS-IUINA)

Department Information


The Laboratory Animal Resource Center (LARC) contributes to and enhances the services and collaborative efforts of medical research at IU School of Medicine. In addition to the provision of basic husbandry for a wide variety of laboratory animal species, the veterinary staff and other highly experienced laboratory animal professionals of the IU School of Medicine LARC provide training, supplies, and specialized service support for medical research.

Job Summary


Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Serves as a Facility Supervisor within LARC.
  • Focuses on performance management, planning, staffing, implementation, and general facility operations.
  • Provides supervision of cage wash, specialty equipment, and husbandry areas to ensure strategies and activities performed align with the institutional mission of the university.

General Responsibilities

  • Develops and delivers papers and presentations to related professional associations and groups on behalf of the university as requested/needed.
  • Develops and maintains operating procedures and guidelines for animal care staff and facility users.
  • Analyzes, monitors, and evaluates performance of assigned staff.
  • Provides training to assigned staff to improve laboratory animal operations.
  • Establishes work priorities, conducts performance reviews, and provides corrective action as needed.
  • Supervises the procurement of laboratory animals for research projects from outside vendors and institutions in accordance with all government regulations and campus policies.
  • Participates and informs employment decisions for assigned staff.
  • Analyzes needs, forecasts trends, develops and manages budgets, and approves expenditures.
  • Develops and enforces procedures to ensure current and continued compliance with regulations.
  • Ensures adequate staffing and effective scheduling.
  • Participates in training and implementation of standard operating procedures.
  • Leads decisions on products and vendors best suited to researcher's needs.
  • Maintains compliance-related records, information, and/or reports.
  • Assesses performance gaps and training needs.
  • Conducts informational research to ensure compliance with all regulatory and campus policies.
  • Participates in the development of animal per diem rates, and oversees various studies for financial analysis.
  • Ensures compliance per IACUC and other regulatory agencies.
  • Researches and identifies development opportunities for assigned staff.
  • Optimizes space utilization and approves all facility renovations.
  • Provides operational management and oversight of laboratory animal staff, facilities, and activities.
  • Contributes to the development of departmental policies, procedures, and processes related to animal husbandry.
  • Identifies operational issues and/or areas of improvement and implements solutions to improve procedures, processes and/or efficiency.
  • Plans and optimizes use of laboratory animal resources (staff, facilities, equipment).
  • Provides guidance and regulatory oversight to animal care staff and facility users, including researchers and their assigned technical research staff.
  • Manages and oversees procurement and inventory control of all equipment, feed, bedding, and husbandry supplies.
  • May participate in seeking and securing external funding in support of operations, including drafting grant proposals and budgets.

Qualifications


EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelor's degree

Preferred

  • Bachelor's degree in a related scientific field

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 2 years lab animal technician and supervisory/lead technician experience

Preferred

  • 5 years related experience in the field of laboratory animal science and/or animal facility management

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required

  • Valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire
  • AALAS Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) certification (2nd level or higher) upon date of hire
  • AALAS Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) certification with 1 year from date of hire

Working Conditions / Demands


The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Advertised Salary


$63,000 to $73,000 annually
