Youth Minister and Ministry Coordinator
Accountability
Reports to the Pastor of St. Patrick Catholic Church
Purpose of Role:
Primarily the Youth Minister will perform a wide variety of activities to direct and coordinate a strong faith filled youth ministry aimed at helping youth grow as disciples of Jesus Christ. The mission of the youth minister will be directed towards youth grades 6-12. This person is to have purposeful engagement in relational ministry with youth and parents, provide for catechesis, and invite youth to serve others, and make disciples. The youth minister is responsible for the development, coordination, supervision and execution of parish programs designed to engage the youth of the parish. He or she should develop close communication with, and mutual support from families of youth. The youth minister should have a heart for ministry as well as the ability to organize and run a comprehensive, fun, joy-filled, and engaging ministry.
The youth minister will also serve as a liaison and presence and help with the coordination of other ministries of the parish, including but not limited to the young adult community, Family Ministry, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Council of Catholic Women, Knights of Columbus, and other parish sponsored ministries and events by providing support, resources, and a prayerful presence to these ministries..
Key Tasks of the Youth Minister:
While not intended to be a complete list, the following are examples of duties associated with this position. Other related expectations, responsibilities, and tasks are required at times. The Youth Minister should be adaptive and receptive to the varying requirements of this position.
  • Coordinate the recruitment, training, support and evaluation of volunteers in the youth ministry
program and provide appropriate training for the youth and adults in leadership positions.
  • Works of Mercy: regular service projects, mission trips, The March For Life Etc.
  • Develop vibrant and orthodox programming that will lead middle school and high school students into a deeper relationship with Jesus. To the end of leading youth to Christ this programming should build a vibrant youth community at St. Patrick. Examples include but are not limited to the following:
    • High-school and Middle-School weekly faith formation
    • Weekly discipleship group for high school youth.
    • Regular social events for middle and high school youth.
    • High-school Retreats; Diocesan Youth Conference, Steubenville, Ave Maria, or similar opportunities
    • Youth Conferences, Life Teen Camps, and mission trips
    • High-school Confirmation preparation program and retreat
    • Works of Mercy: regular service projects, mission trips, The March For Life Etc.
  • Youth Conferences, Life Teen Camps, and mission trips
  • Provide opportunities for youth to hear and respond to the Gospel message and to spread the good news. (community building activities, service opportunities, retreats, conferences, Catholic, etc.)
  • Provide connection through relational ministry between youth and the Church.
  • Plan events and activities specifically designed to recruit new students-both inside and outside the parish-into the program.
  • Facilitate the development of community among young people, their families, their parish and the local community.
  • Establish proactive processes to ensure the safety of all youth and ministers of the church and that all Diocese of St. Augustine guidelines for protection and safety of youth are followed, including annual VIRTUS training.
  • Weekly discipleship group for high school youth.
  • Advocate for the needs of youth and young adults to the pastor and the community.
  • Regular social events for middle and high school youth.
  • Provide support and create young adult ministry opportunties.
  • Have an active presence in local schools, build relationships with teens, and encourage them in their faith.
  • Create young adult programming is orthodox, prayerful, and focused on building relationship with Christ.
  • High-school Retreats; Diocesan Youth Conference, Steubenville, Ave Maria, or similar opportunities
  • Serve as the liaison with the diocesan office of youth ministry and their programs, services, and resources.
  • Support families in their roles as the primary catechists.
  • Lead the core team(s) and catechists in planning and coordinating programs and service
  • Participate in the life and activities of the parish and develop opportunities for youth to be visibly present and involved with the larger parish community.
  • Develop and foster a culture among the teens that is focused on evangelization and discipleship.
  • Participate in ongoing formation and maintain a personal commitment to holiness being sure to frequent the sacraments and seek Christ in daily prayer. The youth minister should attend at least one retreat per year and regular spiritual direction.

Other tasks of the Youth Minister:
  • Adhere to the policies and guidelines of the Diocesan employee handbook.
  • Submit formal long range plans and set goals for youth ministry programs to the Pastor to be reviewed and evaluated annually.
  • Supervise the activities and schedules of Youth Ministry volunteers and employees.
  • Facilitate the planning, implementation and evaluation of Youth Ministry mission and vision.
  • Serve as a staff liturgy coordinator to encourage liturgical heads to help plan, execute, and maintain a presence of the young church in all aspects of liturgy
  • Liaison with St. Patrick Interparish School and St. Francis Academy
  • Develop and maintain records and database(s) of information pertinent to Youth Ministry such as membership lists, resource materials, event information, budget, program income/expense, etc.
  • Actively participate at parish staff meetings and events
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Ensure parish property is respected and appropriately used.
  • Coordinate and schedule other ministries into parish facilities
  • Effectively and creatively provide communication to teens, the parish, and community regarding activities and events through the use of church bulletin, announcements and technology.
  • Represent the parish at Diocesan gatherings and related activities.
  • Develop and monitor a youth and young adult budget in collaboration with the Parish and Finance Councils.
  • Prepare and adhere to an annual budget for the youth ministry.
  • Support all the diverse ministries of the parish
  • Coordinate and facilitate the various ministries of the parish to work together to meet parish needs
  • Collaborate with Diocesan Office of Youth Ministry and GAYLE (Gainesville Area Youth Leaders) Association to provide quality programming, training, and opportunities.
Qualifications:
  • A reliable and respectful commitment to the parish.
  • BA in Theology/Religious Education or a related educational field and/or a certificate in ministry or theology from a Catholic institution of higher learning is preferred.
  • Strong personal relationship with Jesus and a deep love for the Catholic church; must be a practicing Catholic.
  • Ability to read, prepare, and manage budgets for major events and programs.
  • Working knowledge of social media platforms
  • Has knowledge of current youth culture and current trends and issues within those cultures.
  • A joyful, authentic, charitable, prayerful and courageous presence.
  • Mission driven
  • Past experience with youth ministry and/or Life Teen-Edge programs is preferred.
  • Passion for evangelizing and discipling middle and high school-aged students.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, and Microsoft Office; Technological proficiency in email and text communication, web, Facebook, etc.
  • Past experience with youth ministry and/or Life Teen-Edge programs is a plus.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; proficient in composing reports, correspondence and in publishing e-newsletters and flyers in English.
  • Ability to create and share a vision under the direction of the pastor that unites the church's efforts to create evangelizing disciples of Jesus Christ
  • Ability to manage many different tasks at the same time, with attention to quality
  • As a minister of the church working to promote the parish, an in depth knowledge of the Catholic faith is required
  • Effective organizer, planner, and implementer

  • Education, Training and/or Experience

Environment:
This job will require working at various times and places throughout the community, including nights and weekends. There may be work interruptions due to the needs of those around us, but a Christ-like response is always required of those in ministry. This can be challenging, especially as some days are more stressful than others. The tasks will take you into the church buildings during times of prayer and liturgy, so the job must be done with prayerful discernment and decorum. The church office is a place that requires confidentiality in everything.
Relationships:
Due to the type of ministry this job entails, it is important to foster good communications and relationships with people from diverse generational, economic, racial, and social conditions. Some people cannot and do not communicate via computer messaging, while others do. We must be able to find out how to properly communicate with all of these individuals and make them aware of what is available from the parish.
Location:
An office will be provided at St. Patrick Catholic Church, but the ability to work from various locations at various times will be necessary, with the pastor's permission.
