Position Overview:
The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) Directorate at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking a X-ray Instrumentation Technologist with extensive experience in Vacuum Technology or Electronics or Instrument Controls to join our Technical Support team. Members of this team are responsible for providing support across multiple disciplines for Scientific Users in each of our experimental hutches along with planning for and installing all new or modified systems. The X-ray Instrumentation Technologist provides support to scientist, engineers and scientific users/research across multiple disciplines. This position is expected to be highly proficient and work under general supervision and support mechanical, vacuum, electronics or instrumentation and controls of moderate to advance complexity. Work may involve complete systems as well as components, modules, or subsystems.
The X-ray Instrumentation Technologist independently plans and conducts a block of work as a complete project, or as a portion of a larger and more diverse project under general supervision with strict adherence to site-specific safety as well as work planning and control (WPC) protocols. Assignments may be of a scheduling and planning nature, coordinating work performed by other individuals, ensuring efficient use of resources and monitoring target dates, coordinating and/or overseeing the work of other technicians, and evaluating possible effects on the end use application of an item, system or process.
Your specific responsibilities include:
- Overhead crane and lifting equipment operation & inspection
- Monitor and perform adjustments to control functions.
- Perform tests and precision measurements on system components and multiple utility support systems.
- Become proficient and improve multiple operator skill sets; seek thorough understanding of Instrumentation & Controls, electrical/electronic principles and hardware and standard vacuum practices.
- Work schedule may include overtime hours, off-shift, weekends & holiday schedules.
- Operate and diagnose complex equipment and solve process problems; capable of independent decision making.
- Calibrate, repair, rebuild and replace flow, pressure & temperature instruments and devices.
- Perform mechanical repair, precision alignment, and preventive maintenance on equipment following existing Operational & Safety procedures and standards
- Maintain equipment operating records and log sheets
- Work with experimenters, engineers, physicists, and other groups on the design, installation, modification, and performance of user systems.
- Qualify as “Duty Technician”- become proficient in monitoring and operating beam-line safety components and maintain associated documents and records.
To be successful in this position you will bring:
- Technical knowledge of industrial equipment operation and repair.
- H.S./GED or vocational school apprenticeship and several years’ experience in industrial mechanical, electrical, controls, and vacuum systems. College or Technical degree preferred. Additional years of applicable experience may substitute for formal education.
- Demonstrated use of solid math skills & computer proficiency.
- Able to effectively communicate technical issues with senior engineers, operators, tech support personnel, vendors and others in a diverse multicultural environment.
- Ability to work independently with little to no supervision most of the time and occasionally alone on shift.
- Experience in a research and development environment strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with standard environmental and safety rules, regulations, and requirements.
- Must have practical working knowledge of a broad range of fields and equipment such as thermal transfer & isolation, electrical laws, instrumentation & controls, pneumatics, and UH Vacuum systems.
- Be able to adapt to applicable site environmental and safety rules and guidance and meet training requirements.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in multiple technical skill sets such as Instrumentation & Controls, electrical/electronic principles and vacuum systems.
- Ability to use a wide variety of hand and power tools.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and ability to perform moderate to advanced mechanical duties.

This position is represented by SEIU Local 2007 and the collective bargaining agreement between the university and SEIU Local 2007 governs the terms and conditions of employment.
The expected pay range for this position is $50.9 (Step 1) - $61.72 (Step 10) per hour. Placement in the range is subject to the applicable Collective Bargaining Unit. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
