Water Treatment Supervisor Job Summary
The Water Treatment Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day operations of an assigned water treatment plant and provides first-line supervision for assigned Operations personnel who work shifts providing 24-hour, 7-day-per-week coverage. Supervise the operation and maintenance of the plant water treatment facilities, cooling tower treatment and boiler steam treatment, while ensuring safety of personnel and all equipment and systems. Prepare detailed reports related to the plant equipment, water treatment equipment condition, status, and availability. Incumbents are expected to work a standard 8-hour day shift and extended periods as required.
Water Treatment Supervisor Primary Duties And Responsibilities
Water Treatment Supervisor Prerequisites
Minimum two (2) years' experience as a power plant water treatment operator or equivalent position in an operating or generating plant. This position requires a college degree with an emphasis in chemistry or related science or equivalent direct experience. Possess good working knowledge of power plant instrumentation and controls, including routine maintenance. Extensive knowledge of analytical testing as applied to lime softening, filtration, reverse osmosis, demineralization, sludge processing, cooling tower treatment, and power plant chemistry is required. California Dept of Health, Water Treatment Operator certificate is a plus. Familiarity with water treatment equipment industry standards and best practice is a plus.
Water Treatment Supervisor Skills And Abilities
The ability to speak, read and write in English. Ability to perform heavy physical work, occasionally exerting up to 100 pounds of force with assistance, 50 pounds of force on a frequent basis, and up to 20 pounds constantly, performing such activities as grasping, lifting, reaching, crouching, standing, walking, running, climbing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, sitting, and repetitive tasks. Ability to use emergency equipment in emergency situations. The ability to discern assorted colors.
Water Treatment Supervisor Working Conditions
Works in normal power plant environment. Potential exposure to hot, cold, sudden change of temperature, dry, wet, dusty, quiet, noisy, moving objects, exposure to sun and rain, high places, and working alone or with others. Potential hazards include minor cuts, minor burns, electrical shock, falling objects, falls, eyesight and hearing impairment. Wearing of personal protective equipment is necessary, as is the ability to legally operate Company vehicles. Works 12-hour shifts, day or night, with on-duty meals and break periods.

Water Treatment Supervisor Primary Duties And Responsibilities
- Establish monitor and sampling plans and acceptable parameters for all plant water systems using common industry practice and vendor requirements. Monitor and perform analysis of all plant water systems. Review and interpret analytical data to determine system status. Make modification to chemical dosing as needed.
- Determines or recommends actions necessary to achieve or improve plant production targets and plant efficiency.
- Coordinates, accommodates, or directs the activity of maintenance personnel, subcontractors, consultants, or others when within the power plant perimeter or when such activities affect water treatment operation.
- Initiates and carries out disciplinary actions as necessary for assigned personnel.
- Oversee water chemistry tests on all water systems as required. Develop and manage sampling plans including identification of sampling locations, frequencies, and analytical methods. Assess the condition and reliability of plant equipment, such as heat exchangers and particularly the steam drums, based on analytical results and equipment metallurgy.
- Assures the consistent application of, and compliance with, company policies, administrative, operating and safety procedures, related accepted practices, and standing orders.
- Implements and maintains "on-shift" training and recommends advancement, promotion, or other changes of status of assigned personnel.
- Interviews and recommends the selection of potential candidates for filling open assigned Operations positions.
- Controls the usage of materials and supplies for plant operations and assigned personnel.
- Monitors, evaluates, and assures the accuracy of operating logs, plant performance and field status report generation, and other required reporting.
- Directs the activity of assigned on-duty personnel.
- Maintains employee contact sheets and evaluates the work performance of assigned personnel.
- Set up and manage an onsite water treatment lab. Extensive knowledge of analytical testing equipment as applicable to power plant chemistry is required.

- Make appropriate changes to maintain facility operations. Notifies Supervisor/Manager or appropriate agency if compliance exceedance occurs.
- Monitor and troubleshoot operations and equipment for water treatment, cooling tower treatment and boiler water treatment.
- Maintain chemical inventory. Prepare chemical budget and monitor expense.
- Assures that tools, equipment, and vehicles assigned to the unit are clean, organized, and in good working order.
- Prepare appropriate reports to communicate facility status to operations and management. Define and maintain relevant key performance indicators for plant water quality and cost.
- Utilize process control optimization software to optimize plant performance.
- Perform other duties as required.
- Safety sensitive position is a job or position where the employee holding this position has the responsibility for his/her own safety or other people's safety.
- Able to work in accordance with EPA, state and local safety and permit requirements
- Assures that water treatment plant and lab and other assigned areas are kept clean, orderly, and organized.
- Train and supervise operators and other plant personnel in sampling, testing, operations, and maintenance of all water treatment facilities.
- Completes assigned training requirements.
