Job Description
Description

Performs skilled work involving the operation and maintenance of the water treatment plant. Works under the direct supervision of a Shift Lead Operator. Operates the processes/equipment at the Water Treatment Plant to meet compliance requirements and produce high quality drinking water. Observes, interprets, documents and maintains online data for process control and permit compliance. Input operational data, generate regulatory and other reports, and permit renewal applications. Works closely with lab and maintenance personnel. This position is classified as “Essential Personnel” and requires working different shifts, emergencies and overtime, including on call if needed and notified. Shift work incudes weekends and all holidays.

Examples of Duties

Salary Range $31.89 - $39.24

  • May oversee the control board operators to ensure tank levels and system pressures are maintained at proper levels.
  • Performs water tests and analysis to ensure production and quality standards are met. Adjusts treatment process as needed.
  • Adheres to Plant procedures and policies.
  • Works with hazardous chemical, chlorine gas, ammonia, fluoride caustic soda and sulfuric acid.
  • Maintains appearance of laboratory.
  • May assist in the training of new employees regarding department procedures, safety practices and equipment operations.
  • May train and advise water operators on laboratory procedures, techniques and water chemistry.
  • Empties grit pits as assigned.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.
  • Responds and assists with emergency calls and repairs.
  • Maintains official operations logbook.
  • Completes required paperwork including calculating plan readings.
  • Visually inspects equipment and reports maintenance or repair problems at the beginning and at the end of the workday, ensuring that equipment is properly equipped, serviced, and cleaned.
  • Assists Fire Department during chlorine and chemical spills.
  • Operates or assists in the operation of control board, monitors tank levels distribution pressure and flows.
  • May perform manual and/or laboring tasks; uses hand tools and power tools either separate or in conjunction with equipment being operated or tasks being performed.
  • Monitors security and water quality at the City's water storage tanks.
  • Tests and calibrates equipment. Performs preventative maintenance on water treatment machinery and equipment.

Typical Qualifications

Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent, college course work a plus. Must possess a Water Treatment Plant Operator License Class A, B or C.
Valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving history (must remain valid throughout employment)

Preferred Qualifications:
SEDA MOC certification and willingness to obtain additional licenses and certifications is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to check the operation of equipment and to detect defects in operations
  • Candidates should possess strong written and verbal communications skills.
  • Must have the ability and willingness to perform minor equipment maintenance, housekeeping and other job duties as assigned.
  • Ability to keep records and to perform mathematical computations.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practice, equipment and methods used in water treatment
  • Must have the ability to provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers.
  • Knowledge of chemistry as applied to water treatment; Knowledge of laboratory procedures
  • Ability to take accurate readings
  • Must follow safety procedures and promote a safe work environment.

Physical Demands
Ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical abilities include walking, kneeling, climbing, lifting, bending, stooping, pushing and pulling. Ability to perform moderate moving of up to 50 lbs. The noise level in this environment is usually moderate but can be intense. Work is performed indoors and outdoors. Exposure to chemicals, some hazardous, machinery hazards and adverse outdoor weather conditions. Must have ability to detect differences between colors, including shades of color and brightness.

Work Environment
The worker is subject to inside environmental conditions: protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperamental changes (i.e. warehouses, covered loading docks, garages, etc). The worker is subject to outside environmental conditions: no effective protection from the weather. The worker is subject to extreme cold: temperatures below 32 degrees for periods of more than one hour. The worker is subject to extreme heat: temperatures above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour. The worker is subject to noise: there is sufficient noise to cause the workers to shout in order to be heard above the surrounding noise level. The worker is subject to vibration: exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body. The worker is subject to hazards: includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places or exposure to chemicals. The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions: one or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system or the skin: fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases or poor ventilation. The employee works in a dynamic environment that requires them to be sensitive to change and responsive to changing goals, priorities, and needs.

Work Hours
Role requires shift work- shifts are typically 7:00am- 3:00pm; 3:00pm-11:00pm; 11:00pm-7:00am (Including weekends and holidays)
