A strategic Vice President of Procurement with experience working within the building materials/products industry is currently sought by a distribution leader, GMS Canada. This role sits as part of the leadership team of GMS Canada which powers well-known building materials brands stretching from Quebec to Vancouver Island. This role will maintain and grow strong relationships with key suppliers across the country while supporting the strategic decisions of the President through a procurement lens.

They are currently seeking a Vice President of Procurement, a key leadership role within their Canadian Headquarters and leadership team. The VP of Procurement will be tasked with advancing the national procurement activity and strategy across the GMS Canada group.

About The Role


The Vice President, Procurement is a key member of the Senior Leadership team and reports directly to the President of GMS Canada. Working from the Corporate Headquarters located in Vaughan, ON, the VP, Procurement will be tasked with taking on a strategic and vital role within the business. As this role is national in scope, some overnight travel will be required - Circa. 30%.


High-level responsibilities include but are not limited to;


  • Promotes continuous improvement initiatives, upholds best procurement practices, and remains abreast of market trends.
  • The VP communicates scorecards on procurement programs and holds the business unit Re-buyers accountable to set targets. Moreover, ethical procurement practices are upheld across the group, with a focus on compliance with corporate governance requirements.
  • Using their superior negotiation skills, the VP, Procurement will spearhead strategic procurement planning and establish national supply agreements, ensuring competitive pricing and program support, thereby enabling the achievement of market share and profitability targets.
  • Actively manage risks within the supply chain and diversifies the supplier and product base as required through effective sourcing strategies.
  • Bilingual English/French would be considered an asset.
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with existing and new suppliers is paramount, and ensuring supplier performance is regularly evaluated and leveraged to ensure adherence to availability, delivery, and cost metrics.
  • Cross-functional collaboration with other GMS Company department leads and other cross-functional stakeholders such as operations, sales, and finance, ensure alignment with overall business objectives.
  • Evaluate new business opportunities through a procurement lens, supporting the GMS Canada President and other senior leaders within the business with timely recommendations as required.


WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?


The VP, Procurement is a critical position that significantly influences and impacts the overall health and outlook of the business. To excel in this role, the selected candidate must showcase exceptional (and versatile) negotiation skills, ensuring their ability to achieve highly advantageous pricing and comprehensive programs with suppliers.


  • A minimum of 10+ years of experience in a senior procurement or purchasing leadership position will be required to be considered.
  • Act as a driving force behind the advancement of the GMS Canada procurement strategy, ultimately contributing to the overall strength of the organization.
  • Possesses strong general business acumen to adaptably identify opportunities and risks associated with procurement activities.
  • Experience working with products and suppliers within the building materials/supply industry will be regarded with strong preference.
  • A demonstratable background of successful negotiations with suppliers at the National level is required as this position will hold responsibility for nationwide procurement operations.
  • The ideal candidate will possess a well-documented track record of accomplishment, ideally within a distribution business model.
