Job Description

Position Summary:

The VP Operations is responsible for leadership and team building in all Operations functions in a manufacturing environment, including quality assurance/regulatory affairs, planning, purchasing, production, packaging, batching, testing, warehousing, and shipping. He/she will develop best practices for efficiency and effectiveness in all areas of responsibility, and manage the balance between compliance/regulations and the need to keep the business flowing on a daily basis. The VP Operations is a true “steward” of the operating strategy, plans and processes who can work closely with and support the QA/QC team, Sales, Customer Service, and all functional stakeholders. He/she helps the organization through creative thinking, solution-oriented, results-focused, and outcome-based actions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the development and formulation of short and long-range planning, policies, programs and objectives for all operational departments. Develops operational strategic initiatives and drives to completion.
  • Formulates and recommends cGMP operating policies and programs that guide the organization in maintaining and improving its regulatory compliance, competitive position, and profitability of the operation.
  • Initiates and coordinates major projects (e.g., plant layout changes, installation of capital equipment, major repairs, etc.).
  • Performs other job-related tasks as assigned duties, responsibilities and activities may change at any time with or without notice
  • Mentors and develops key team members for successful performance (gap to goal in existing roles), promotion and/or succession, establishing formal plans, as warranted; also helps to build strong positive work culture and team dynamics through team-building and other activities/processes/exercises that improve communication, cohesion, collaboration and cross-functional cooperation.
  • Directs, end to end, the supply chain management process and systems, ensuring strong, dependent and accountable vendor management relations (including agreements that minimize risk of disruption or change, and back-up vendors for critical areas).
  • Oversight and strategic planning of R&D and new product development, including research, compliance, and set-up with contract manufacturers, when necessary.
  • Ensures Business continuity by assessing business processes and planning for risk mitigation, capacity modeling and expansion readiness.
  • Ensures continued protection of company’s intellectual information and property and builds systems and process that improve upon that protection
  • Directs and monitors department management to accomplish goals of the operating plan, consistent with established safety, quality and manufacturing procedures.
  • Ownership of the S&OP process including consensus meetings, demand and supply planning activities and serves as the liaison between sales and operations.
  • Identifies, recommends and implements changes to improve productivity and reduce cost and scrap, monitor scrap and rework data, without the loss of product quality. Directs the establishment, implementation and maintenance of production standards.
  • Hires, trains, develops and evaluates staff. Develops succession plans within span of control.
  • Directs and coordinates various programs essential to cGMP manufacturing procedures (e.g., training, safety, housekeeping, cost reduction, worker involvement, security, etc.).
  • Acts as liaison between department management/subordinate levels, as well as executive/department manager levels to inform personnel of communications, decisions, policies and all matters that affect their performance, attitudes and results.
  • Provides bi-weekly reports to CEO and ownership, monthly, quarterly and annual reporting packages for ELT
  • Develops the manufacturing plan and establishes procedures for maintaining high standards of manufacturing operations to ensure that products conform to established customer and Company quality standards.

Education and Experience:

  • Sound knowledge of current status and new developments in manufacturing and packaging technologies and applications.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in managing Manufacturing Operations with strong exposure to all quality, safety, and regulatory requirements.
  • Proven Operations and Manufacturing track record in leading organizations
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Six Sigma Green Belt preferred

Competencies/Skills:

  • High EQ and excellent relationship building skills. Open, flexible and not afraid to take an unpopular stand if needed
  • Strong understanding of SOP development
  • Must be a self-starter, able to independently manage projects and willing to work in a fast paced, ever-changing and dynamic regulatory environment
  • Excellent communication, leadership and team building skills
  • The ability to use appropriate methods and a flexible interpersonal style to help build a cohesive and successful team
  • Bilingual (Spanish) highly desirable
  • Skilled in implementing operational improvements in key areas
  • Ability to set and manage priorities
  • In-depth expertise in all Operations functions in a manufacturing environment, including quality assurance/regulatory affairs, planning, purchasing, production, batching, testing, warehousing, and shipping
  • Excellent organizational and follow through skills
  • Strong computer skills to include Microsoft Office & ERP (SAP)
