Safety is a primary job responsibility of all our employees and is a condition of employment. As our Vice President of Safety you will lead all aspects of safety at the executive and corporate level for the entire enterprise.


This is a Full-Time, Exempt position that is based in Houston, TX.



Summary:


You will oversee and direct all aspects of the enterprise’s safety program. This position is responsible for leading national strategy formation and implementation of the regional business plans, including developing, implementing, and managing the safety and occupational component of personnel, materials, equipment, and environment in a manner consistent with mandated regulations and company policies. It is the responsibility of the Vice President of Safety to coordinate these efforts within the business unit as well as the business unit’s job sites and facilities. This position must lead the efforts in the effective supervision, management, motivation, and training of all team members in areas of personal safety, health, regulatory compliance, and environmental concerns.


This position is responsible for ensuring that regular audits and safety reviews are performed for all nationwide operations to assess compliance with the enterprise’s Safety Policies and Procedures, as well as Federal and State regulatory compliance requirements. This position is charged with the responsibility of implementing and maintaining the directives of Bigge’s policies and procedures. You should display exceptional knowledge of construction safety policies and relevant occupational safety and health administration (OSHA) standards.


Reporting directly to the Vice President and Chief Business Development Officer, the successful Vice President of Safety is a proactive individual that preempts problems as well as problem-solvers. He/she promotes a positive safety culture/risk mitigation culture and recognizes the importance of safe behaviors and safe work practices. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in the field and managing personnel. Ultimately, an outstanding Vice President of Safety should be able to identify opportunities to minimize workplace safety hazards quickly and efficiently.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Manage and develop safety staff.
  • Develop a data-based safety program that will identify and mitigate safety-based losses.
  • Knowledge of all OSHA and Cal OSHA and the ability to research standards, answer specific questions, and solve safety issues.
  • Interpret, analyze, and prepare documentation regarding reports, contracts, and site-specific information.
  • Develop, implement, and manage both national and regional safety programs and procedures that will reduce the frequency and severity of safety-related incidents.
  • Establish lines of communication in which all employees play an active role in safety compliance and addressing concerns.
  • Manage the job site orientation process regarding safety.
  • Conduct audits ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations.
  • Assure that adequate, properly trained personnel are available to carry out required functions safely on all projects and prospective projects.
  • Implement improved safety processes and effectively manage resistance.
  • Communicate professionally with all levels of personnel.
  • Professionally communicate and enforce company safety standards to subcontractors.
  • Oversee accident investigations and initiate corrective processes.
  • Initiate, coordinate, and direct training specific to the job hazard analysis.
  • Develop, supervise, and coordinate training programs or media which will increase proficiency in safe practices and promote safety consciousness.
  • Monitor Corporate Safety communication to maintain training effectiveness, such as signage, toolbox meetings, etc.
  • Ensure the proper reporting, investigation, and corrective action for vehicle accidents, personal injury accidents, property damage, near-miss incidents, and general public incidents involving Bigge operations.
  • Anticipate project safety needs and assist Safety Directors, Safety Managers, Superintendents / Project Managers with required safety training.
  • Develop, educate, implement, and enforce company safety policies and ensure compliance with rules, regulations, and laws.
  • Coordinate with Risk Management to develop policies reducing the enterprise's safety exposures.
  • Develop and maintain task-based safety training on all projects.


Required Skills and Qualifications:


  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, construction designs, and legal documents.
  • Ability to be “on call” 24/7 for emergencies.
  • Working knowledge of Federal and State regulations
  • Travel can be up to 50% of the time.
  • OSHA 500 certification.
  • CSP is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and recognize safety standards and issues
  • Minimum of 15 years of progressive responsibilities in areas of field safety and health program management.
  • Commitment to continual development and renewal of required certifications
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Outstanding communication skills, including written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation.
  • Strong proficiency in the Microsoft suite of programs, including Word®, PowerPoint®, Outlook®, and Excel®.
  • Highly motivated self-starter who can effectively prioritize, multi-task, and manage to accomplish objectives within prescribed deadlines.
  • Degree in Construction Safety Management or equivalent training.
  • Computer skills consistent with generating safety reports, data analysis, and communications
  • Ability to perform extensive travel for training, auditing, and incident review purposes.
