Job Summary


Serving as the business partner to a Caterpillar Group President, the Resource Industries Segment HR Vice President provides strategic and operational leadership for all human resources activities within the global segment. Primary responsibilities include developing the segment talent strategy, partnering with Business Unit leaders to build strong business and HR leadership teams, and overseeing operationally excellent delivery and execution of HR support and associated initiatives required to achieve business objectives.


What You Will Do


You will be accountable for:


  • Providing direction and support to the business unit leadership teams in areas such as succession planning, performance management, learning and development, leadership development, employee relations, recognition, communications and workforce planning
  • Robust counsel and due diligence leadership as it pertains to mergers and acquisitions, restructuring or footprint changes, facility openings and closures
  • The position may need to travel worldwide, frequency up to 1-2 weeks per quarter.
  • Identifying, attracting, developing and retaining top diverse talent for the organization, utilizing both internal and external talent pipelines to maintain strong talent benches for key leadership roles
  • Serving as a key member of Caterpillar’s enterprise HR Leadership Team, (dotted line reporting to the CHRO) partnering with Centers of Expertise and HR Shared Services to help shape the enterprise talent strategies, HR support delivery models and functional talent management plans
  • Serving as a thought leader for innovative talent development initiatives, working in close coordination with other segments and CoEs to best leverage enterprise resources


What You Have


  • As the senior-most subject matter expert for talent within the segment, the individual must be effective in influencing, coaching and developing senior-level leaders and leadership teams. In parallel, they must be an effective champion of employee interests, holding the highest degree of responsibility to ensure our talent processes, policies, strategies and decisions demonstrate ‘our values in action’.
  • Given the diverse range of businesses supported, it is critical to be able to demonstrate agility and flexibility in the development and application of talent strategies, policies and processes while aligning to the core principles and practices of the enterprise.
  • This senior leadership role requires a balance of strong business acumen, broad analytical skills and excellent decision-making capability.
  • The typical career journey of this leader would include significant experience (10+ years) serving as a senior-level HR partner to business and/or functional leadership, as most often also having in-depth operational knowledge of or leadership experience in other human resources such as talent acquisition, labor relations, compensation and benefits, training and development, and organizational effectiveness.
  • Lastly, a balance of innovation and sustainability is required such that talent investments and initiatives for the segment deliver discernable positive impact to the business and employees.
  • This requires being able to bravely challenge the status quo while also driving consistency and continuous improvement.


Top Candidates May Also Have


  • Experience managing HR for a technical group like Engineering or IT, and able to adapt across multiple types of divisions, from R&D to Procurement to Product Development and Manufacturing, to Commercial Sales and Marketing.
  • Experience across multiple types of functions is preferred.
