Job Description

The Chapin School, an independent K-12 day school for girls located in New York City, is seeking a Varsity Volleyball Assistant Coach for the 2023 season.

Under the direction of the Director of Athletics and Head Volleyball Coach, the assistant volleyball coach will aid in the skill development and planning throughout the season. Candidates should have knowledge and experience within the sport and understand how to teach, mentor, and motivate student-athletes.

A Chapin athletic coach demonstrates the following knowledge, skills, abilities:

  • Is an effective communicator and educator who is able to teach athletes of all skill levels and abilities and understands the importance of listening as a key component of teaching.
  • Models professional leadership and behavior by adhering to the same rules expected of the athletes, displaying a positive attitude, and motivating and inspiring the team.
  • Knowledge of appropriate safety measures to ensure the well-being of student-
  • Clear commitment to the educational philosophy and mission of the School and Athletic Department and any ongoing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
  • Understands the Not only must they possess in-depth knowledge of fundamental skills, progressions, and strategies, but must also be able to adapt teaching instruction to all athletes.

The Varsity Volleyball Assistant Coach specific duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Assess skill level of athletes during tryouts and throughout the season.
  • Special events requiring additional hours and responsibilities: Homecoming Saturday October 14th, post-season league, and state tournaments.
  • Must abide by Chapin’s Coaches Handbook, Student-Athlete Handbook, Chapin’s Mission, NYSAISAA and AAIS policies.
  • Pre-season: August 21st through August 31st ; Regular-season: September 1st through November 6th.
  • Communicate and meet with the coaching staff on a regular basis.
  • Must care deeply about each student athlete’s experience on the team; make fair and equitable decisions about appointing positions, playing time, strategy, practice times, support attendance policies.
  • 5 days per week. Practices are generally 3:30pm - 5:30pm. Option to add Tuesday and/or Thursday 7-8am practices. Games are generally between 4-6pm
  • Communicate effectively and in a professional and timely manner with athletes, and when necessary, parents/guardians of athletes.
  • Must meet and submit all required certifications and documents prior to working with student-athletes (such as Concussion education, First Aid/CPR certification, etc.)

Qualifications:
