Job Description

We currently have an opportunity for an Underwriting Manager to join our Specialty Property Team in our Alpharetta, GA offices or remote. The Underwriting Manager assists with the development and execution of strategic initiatives that contribute to overall growth of a line of business in an assigned territory or region. Manages all components of development, growth and profitability for a book of business. Manages profit, losses, and expenses for assigned products in an assigned territory or region. Manages assigned Underwriting staff and has underwriting referral authority to decline or accept risks. Responsible for ensuring compliance with underwriting standards and authorities. Markets products and actively participates in agency planning and relationship building.

Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for agency relationship related decisions.
  • Manages underwriting quality and book management, which includes: executing underwriting strategy (including portfolio management), self-auditing new and renewal business (eligibility, class fit, price to exposure, use of pricing tools, deductibles, insurance to value, analysis of losses, and well documented approvals of underwriting edits). Ensures compliance with standards and authorities are being met. Identifies and analyzes book trends, and manages catastrophe plans.
  • Provides strategic and tactical input to Management regarding products, book of business and/or region. Determines and make recommendations for marketing, pricing, products and systems.
  • Manages financial performance of all assigned products in assigned territory or region including: accident year loss ratio, premium plans (including new business, retention, and rate/exposure increases), commission targets, staffing model, and oversight of portions of the budget.
  • Oversees agency relationships in an assigned region. Frequently travels to key producers, fosters agency relationships and remains highly visible in the marketplace. Participates in agency planning and communicates/monitors agency action plans along with underwriters as needed. Oversees agency auditing, producer training support, and assists underwriters with agency authority management.
  • Manages assigned staff, including development, goal setting, skill assessment, staff selection, role alignment, and performance appraisals of staff. Provides frequent communication and measurement of corporate, regional and local goals. Oversees training and personal development programs within the group.
  • Maintains a strong professional knowledge of competitive, regulatory and legal environments within the territory or region and applies this information effectively. Consults with other businesses or Home Office staff and may participate on related projects and committees. Participates in industry events as a subject matter expert and representative of the company.
  • Must have the skills needed to manage a staff. Has the authority to hire, fire and other aspects of performance management.
  • Depending on line of business or segment may have responsibility for driving new business production results for assigned territory by underwriting a book of business. This includes writing new business, identifying program opportunities and maintaining high level agency relationships within their assigned producer plant.
Requirements:
  • Exceptional management skills, including informal training and formal development of staff.
  • High level of sales and relationship building skills. Maintains strong professional knowledge of legislative issues, industry trends and marketplace issues within the territory or region.
  • Expert knowledge of technical underwriting, pricing, and coverage issues.
  • Must have proven analytical, decision making, problem-solving, communication, organization, and teamwork skills.
  • Must be able to interpret and contribute to company and business unit financials.
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office suite and underwriting systems.
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience and training preferred.
  • 3-5 years of supervisory experience, preferred.
  • Professional insurance designation is preferred (AICPCU, RPLU).
  • 7-10 years or progressively more complex specialty property underwriting experience.
Our salary ranges are determined by many factors including location, role, experience and skillset of the candidate. The following ranges displayed reflect the target base salary for new hires but your recruiter will share more specific compensation information with you during the hiring process. The typical base salary range for this position is: $137,000 – $182,000, based on the factors aforementioned. For candidates located in San Francisco, CA; Hoboken, NJ; and the New York City metro area, the base salary range is $160,000 -$187,000. In addition to base salary, full time Intact employees are also eligible for bonus potential and a full range of benefits to include: 401(k) savings and annual contributions of up to 12% of annual salary, competitive paid time off programs, medical, vision and dental plans, mental health support programs, life and disability insurance, paid parental leave and a variety of voluntary benefits.
