Job Description

PRIMARY FUNCTION

The LVN Triage is responsible for triaging patient calls and identifying which patients need in-office medical care versus OTP medical questions answered by using the protocols put in place the Medical Director and Lead Clinicians. All questions should go to lead clinicians to answer should the LVN not be able to make a confident decision based on the information given by the parent.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This list may not include all the duties that may be assigned.

  • Advises patients per established protocols.
  • Portal and phone messages include developmental concerns, parenting inquires, acute and chronic illness concerns
  • Behavioral health questions are generally referred to provider of record
  • Workflow and protocols of the practice
    • Behavioral health questions are generally referred to provider of record
    • Identification of symptoms that require immediate and/or emergency assess are primary functions
  • Prior authorization
  • At home remedies and treatments
  • OTC medication and treatment
  • Education regarding ways to improve health
  • Other possible responsibilities that may be given at practices discretion:
    • Referral
    • Standing orders for medication
    • Prior authorization
    • Care coordination functions

Some Quality metrics for the triage position include but are not limited to…

  • Non-urgent messages are answered within 1 business day
  • Messages sent on the weekend are answered the next business day
  • Refills are filled in no longer than 3 business days
  • Emergency/Urgent messages are answered within 1 hour
  • Message should be answered in a timely fashion

    • Responses are in lay terms and easily understood by nonmedical persons
    • Responses are clearly documented, using correct medical terminology, and meeting all medical and legal requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Graduation from accredited LVN program required.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum 1 year of experience in a healthcare setting required.

LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION

  • CPR required
  • LVN Certification

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology
  • Ability to communicate and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees and the public
  • Ability to assess emergency situations and act accordingly
  • Knowledge of universal precaution procedures in medical safety practices
