Job Description
Inwood Consulting Engineers, Inc. has an excellent opportunity for a full-time entry-level engineer for traffic studies and traffic operations design services at our main office in Oviedo, Florida. This position includes preparing studies to identify engineering solutions to traffic operational and safety issues. It also includes traffic operations design, such as signalization, highway lighting, signs, and pavement markings. The ideal candidate should be able to identify, state, and analyze well-defined engineering problems and have a basic knowledge of transportation-related design concepts, principles, and theories. Work will be performed under the oversight of senior staff.
Essential Tasks
Research, collect, and review data for transportation-related projects.
Assist with investigating traffic problems by collecting and analyzing data to assess crash rates; identifying appropriate safety countermeasures; and recording the volume, type, and movement of vehicular or pedestrian traffic at specified times on or near local, arterial, and/or limited access roadway facilities
Analyze and interpret data from traffic modeling software, GIS, or associated databases
Plan, design, and assist with improving components of traffic control systems to accommodate current or projected traffic and to increase usability and efficiency
Utilize specialized computer software to assist with the analysis, design, and plans production for new transportation systems or parts of systems, such as highways, streets, bridges, drainage structures, and roadway lighting
Aid in the preparation of detailed reports and documentation of the design approach
Evaluate transportation systems or traffic control devices and lighting systems to determine the need for modification or expansion
Participate in constructability reviews, construction observation, field reviews, and preparation of field documentation
Act as a backup to other staff in the PD&E and Transportation groups to perform related work as needed
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in engineering
Ability to communicate technical information, demonstrate flexibility, and work well with others
Possess attention to detail, organizational and time management skills, and an interest in improving transportation safety for all modes of transportation
Preferred Qualifications
Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and experience with MicroStation or similar software
Prior practical experience related to traffic operations or familiarity with related software packages, such as HCS, SIDRA, and Synchro
Prior exposure to concepts of Highway Capacity and Highway Safety
