As a Traffic Control Electrician I-IV DOQ (aka: ‘Traffic Signal Technician’) you will be working in a high paced environment with a team of technicians who are well trained and motivated to provide specialized services that are crucial to keeping the County’s roads safe for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. As part of this team, you will be contributing to the daily maintenance of over 240 signalized intersections, over 5,000 streetlights and over 400 flashing beacons and other traffic control devices countywide. You will be operating high reach bucket trucks, performing maintenance on various electrical and electronic circuits to include repairing, and constructing various traffic infrastructure.
NOTE: DEPENDING ON QUALIFICATIONS (DOQ), POSITION LEVEL AND SALARY WILL BE BASED UPON EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES.

What You Will Do
These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position.

  • Maintains, repairs, adjusts, and installs solar power systems and components. Installs batteries and generators for power backup systems.
  • Performs other related work (including weather or other extreme emergency duties) as required in response to emergency situations during nighttime hours, weekends, holidays, and storm events.
  • Performs digging and trenching in the process of installing and repairing underground infrastructure to include junction boxes, conduit, and wiring.
  • Performs maintenance, modification, repair, testing and installation of electrical systems and components for traffic signals and highway lighting.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs electronic equipment and instrumentation. Recommends replacement when necessary.
  • Performs emergency repair of traffic signals to mitigate traffic congestion and vehicle accidents.
  • Subject to serving alternate work schedules and rotating on-call status.
  • Executes temporary traffic control plans and maintains safe work zones through proper application of maintenance of traffic devices.

Minimum Qualifications

All Levels

  • Must be able to participate in a standby rotation schedule outside of normal shift hours, with the ability to respond to emergencies within a 2-hour time frame.
  • Must possess and maintain valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License Class B (w/ air brake endorsement) or have permit prior to employment and obtain within one hundred twenty (120) days of hire.
  • High school diploma, GED, or another certificate of competency.

Electrician I
  • IMSA Traffic Signal Level I, Certification desired, or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire date.

Electrician II
  • IMSA Traffic Signal Level II, Certification, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire date.
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in traffic signal and street lighting installation and maintenance.

Electrician III
  • IMSA Traffic Signal Level III, Certification, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire date.
  • Five (5) years' experience in traffic signal installation and maintenance.

Electrician IV
  • Licensed Journeyman Electrician or a minimum of five (5) years documented work history in the following fields: traffic signal, highway lighting, residential, commercial, or industrial electrical.
  • IMSA Traffic Signal Level III certification
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered at all levels.
Supplemental Information
Electrician I
  • 1 year of traffic signal, street lighting or electrical trade work experience desired
Electrician III
  • Associate degree in related field desired.
Electrician IV
  • Associate degree in related field desired.
