Job Overview
The Surgical Technician is a clinician who provides intra-operative technical assistance to physicians and Registered Nurses (RN) who care for patients experiencing a surgical intervention or other invasive procedure. The Surgical Technician actively participates in the work of the unit, committee work, and program level activities and projects and role models exemplary work standards.
This Surgical Tech position will be located in the Labor and Delivery Department's OB Unit. Experience in C - Section procedures is preferred.

Shift: Full time night shift 1830-0630 (3-12 hour shifts per week)

Qualifications
- Licensure(s): State of Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) Surgical Technologist or Surgical Assistant Registration
- Experience: Proficiciency in C-Sections, Vaginal delivery set ups, and OB workflow preferred
- Certification(s): American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers at time of hire. NBSTSA or NCCT Certified Surgical Technologist preferred.
- Education: Associate’s degree in surgical technology is required.
- Equivalency: Graduate of a military training program in surgical technology or Diploma in Surgical Technology and Surgical Technologist certification may be considered in lieu of an Associate’s degree.
Responsibilities
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the functions which the employee may be expected to perform.
- Assists with room turnovers and set-ups; restocks and orders supplies; utilizes downtime effectively; and participates in department quality improvement activities.
- Promotes patient safety by participating in the surgical time out; labeling medications on the field; verifying patient weight and allergies with RN prior to passing medications to physician; communication of hand-off of care when relieved during case; and selection of appropriate instruments and supplies based on patient size and procedure.
- Assists with patient positioning and properly identifies specimens.
- Monitors potential hazards for sharp or burn injury.
- Safely handles bio-hazardous materials and uses standard precautions and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Utilizes preference cards to prepare for surgical procedure; scrubs all cases as assigned; anticipates needs of case by opening correct supplies and instruments; is attentive to flow of the surgery so that surgeons’ needs are anticipated.
- Precepts new employees.
- Participates in departmental, divisional, and/or organizational committees and projects as assigned.
- Acts as a role model for other team members.

Guidelines: Guidelines are generally but not always clearly applicable, requiring the employee to exercise judgment in selecting the most pertinent guideline, interpret precedents, adapt standard practices to differing situations, and recommend alternative actions in situations without precedent.
Complexity: Duties assigned are generally complex and may be of substantial intricacy. Work assignment is performed within an established framework under general instructions but requires simultaneous coordination of assigned functions or projects in various stages of completion.
Decision Making: Exercises judgment and discretion, and is responsible for determining the time, place and sequence of the work performed.
Communications: Contacts with the public or employees where explanatory or interpretive information is exchanged, defended, and gathered and discretion and judgment are required within the parameters of the job function.
Supervision Received: Performs work with minimal supervisory oversight. Under general supervision, the employee receives assignments and is expected to carry them through to completion with substantial independence. Work is reviewed for adherence to instructions, accuracy, completeness, and conformance to standard practice or precedent. Recurring work clearly covered by guidelines may or may not be reviewed.

Salary Information
Hourly Salary Range: $21.98 to $32.97
