Job Description
The Position


Contra Costa County’s Public Works Department is seeking qualified individuals to fill multiple Stationary Engineer (Building Maintenance Mechanic) vacancies. Stationary Engineers operate, maintain, and repair HVAC systems in a variety of buildings throughout the County. Responsibilities include resolving customer complaints related to airflow, heating, cooling, and ventilation; responding to HVAC related alarms and elevator malfunctions; calibrating and maintaining pneumatic, electric, and computerized (DDC system) controls; inspecting chillers and ensuring containment and proper handling of refrigerants, which may contain chlorofluorocarbons and other hazardous materials; and other related work as required.
The Public Works Department is currently recruiting to fill four (4) vacant positions for the Stationary Engineer classification. Employees may work in detention facilities and in close proximity to inmates and patients.

What you will typically be responsible for:
  • Recording and maintaining maintenance records of all mechanical equipment in your facilities.
  • Working with fellow tradespersons on tenant improvement projects within the County.
  • Performing regular inspections of your assigned facilities for proper equipment operation.
  • Inspecting and logging conditions of fire extinguishers and emergency lighting.
  • Working with outside contractors who perform EPA and OSHA required inspections and testing.
  • Testing and treating open and closed loop water systems used for heating and cooling.
  • Responding to routine and emergency work orders submitted by customer departments.

The eligible list established from this recruitment may remain in effect for six months

Minimum Qualifications

License Required: Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License. Out of state motor vehicle operator’s license will be accepted during the application process.
Certificates: Must be Type 1 or Type 2 certified for Handling Chlorofluorocarbons at the time of application, and obtain a Federal Universal Certification for Handling Chlorofluorocarbons within nine (9) months from the date of hire.
Education: 1) Possession of a high school diploma, G.E.D. equivalency or high school proficiency certificates and (2) satisfactory completion of at least one college-level course in BOTH basic refrigeration and electricity OR completion of a HVAC trade school program.
Experience: Two (2) years of full-time or its equivalent experience as a stationary engineer or operating engineer maintaining and repairing HVAC equipment.
Substitution for College Courses: An additional three (3) years of full time (or its equivalent) experience as a Stationary Engineer or Operating Engineer, maintaining and repairing HVAC equipment; one (1) year of which must have been at the journey level
Substitution for Experience: Completion of a HVAC apprenticeship certification program

Other Requirement: Applicants must be able to obtain the Detention Facility Clearance to work in the detention facilities

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of current Title 24 and/or OSHA requirements.
  • Knowledge of diesel generators.
  • Experience working with data/server room cooling systems.

Selection Process

  • Training and Experience Evaluation: Candidates that clearly demonstrate they possess the minimum qualifications will have their training and experience evaluated. The training and experience questionnaire is a part of the application and is designed to evaluate each candidate's relevant education, training and/or experience as presented in the application and supplemental questionnaire. (Weighted 100%)
  • Application Filing and Evaluation: Applications will be evaluated to determine which candidates will move forward in the next phase of the recruitment process.
  • Final Selection Interviews: These will be scheduled by the department once the eligible list is established.
