Reporting to: News Editor

Based in: New York/USA

Salary: $45,000

This is a role for a new US-based Staff Writer to join the world-leading NME team to work on the News desk. With a broad and diverse range of tastes, you will work under the News Editor to help curate, source and create the best film and TV news while ensuring that NME remains the destination and authority for pop culture news – as well as helping to build and grow on our existing readership of millions and carry our 70 year legacy into a bold new future.

We are looking for film and TV-obsessed journalist with their finger on the pulse when it comes to what NME readers want to know.

An extensive knowledge of the actors, shows and movies that are trending and predicting what the next big thing is, will be key. Having what it takes to make a story go viral, while also tending to the needs of the NME audience will be essential.

You will be part of a global team that will help to grow NME’s already substantial US readership and in turn, be a key member of one of the world’s most respected, celebrated and longest-running music and pop culture brands.

Do you have a proven track record of sourcing world exclusive stories from the biggest film and TV stars and can you produce clean and accurate news copy to the highest standard, while telling the story fully in NME’s unique tone of voice? Then this role could be for you.

Requirements:

-You will have world-leading knowledge of film and TV, as well as contemporary and legacy music and pop culture, with a diverse range of tastes and interest

-At least three years experience working in a fast-paced news environment for reputable entertainment publications, with knowledge of media law

-Thorough knowledge of SEO practices

-Familiar with WordPress or similar CMS platforms

-Existing relationships with leading film/TV PRs, artists and other key industry figures and contacts within the US preferred

-You will have a track record of sourcing exclusive news stories from high-profile interviews

-Experience presenting on-camera and in other multimedia formats is a bonus

Responsibilities:

-Work with the News Editor on daily rolling film and TV news coverage to ensure all essential breaking and trending topics are covered, as well as the full breadth of genres, artists and topics.

-Work efficiently to assure a high turnaround of copy throughout the day

-Be able to work independently and responsively in a different time zone to the News Editor.

-Ensure your own work is as comprehensive and effective as possible, as well as diligently subbing the work of others and providing instruction and guidance

-Plan, assist with and carry out ongoing campaigns and investigations across news – spearheading stories that are particularly US-centric and of interest to readers in different regions of your territory

-Work to grow NME’s ever-expanding US readership, with fresh ideas for more growth and connection

-Assist in ensuring social media messaging is as engaging and far-reaching as possible

-Help to harvest more viral and engaging news content from across the internet

-Help to increase regular output of original film and TV news interviews

-Make the most of original interviews – ensuring copy is hard-hitting, heavyweight and far-reaching

-Work on nurturing good industry relationships in the US

-Help keep a diary of film and TV events across the US

-Be ready to cover events out of office hours, including red carpet premieres, festivals, press conferences, junkets and ‘in the field’ reporting.

-On camera presenting and in other multimedia formats as needed

-Respond effectively and efficiently to feedback and instructions from the News Editor and to assure uniform standard across all news output

-Meet monthly quotas for other features and reviews across NME, while maintaining news as your priority
