SHIFT I (8:00PM-8:30AM)

PURPOSE OF POSITION

Under the general supervision of the Head Nurse/Nurse Manager, a staff nurse assigned to Labor & Delivery units provides age-appropriate professional nursing care including, assessment, planning, problem identification, care implementation, patient/family education, and evaluation of care in the perinatal women and the neonates.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Demonstrates ability to screen and refer for psychosocial problems including elder abuse/neglect, domestic violence, depression, suicide risk, and substance abuse.
  • Communicates patient's progress/issues using handoff and escalation policies.
  • Participates in Unit Performance Improvement activities
  • Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team in developing plan of care; provides and documents intervention according to established policies.
  • Conforms to regulatory agency standards that guide care in the assignment specialty
  • Demonstrates ability to perform general procedures, including medication management, venipuncture and peripheral IV insertion.
  • Assess and re-assess patients' needs/problems and to determine response to treatment/intervention; completes admission assessment within 24 hours.
  • Utilizes available technology and equipment in providing patient care.
  • Serves as patient/family advocate; provides age-appropriate education to patients/family
  • Demonstrates commitment to continued professional development, including Specialty Board Certification.

Minimum Qualifications


For individuals holding an unrestricted registered professional nursing license BEFORE July 1,
2020 in New York State, another state or United States territory:
1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse
in New York State; and
2. Valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart
Association (AHA).
For individuals issued a registered professional nursing license on or AFTER July 1, 2020,
based on expected implementation of Chapter 502 of the Laws of 2017 and Chapter 380 of the
Laws of 2018:
1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional
Nurse in New York State; and
a. A Bachelor’s of Science degree in Nursing or higher (or other nursing degree, as identified by NYS
Education Department including Master of Science in Nursing, Doctor of Nursing Practice, Doctor of
Philosophy Degree in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Science) from an accredited college or
university, registered with the NYSED; or
b. Obtains a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Nursing or higher, as described in “a” above, within ten
(10) years of the date of initial licensure; and
2. Valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association
(AHA).

Department Preferences

  • Completes comprehensive orientation including clinical rotation to like units.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) Required
  • EPIC (EMR) Strongly Desired
  • Has current BCLS and obtains NRP prior to work assignment
  • One (1) year Medical Surgical RN experience in acute settings.
  • Undergoes service specific training as required, such as post-partum care, infant screening and care, and other specialty training programs.
  • One (1) year Medical Surgical RN experience preferred.
  • Currently licensed as Registered Professional Nurse in the State of New York.
