ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

We are seeking a dynamic, highly skilled, and passionate Staff Firmware QA Engineer to support our firmware development activities. This important, technical position will work closely with the firmware team and other cross-functional teams to ensure the best test coverage for our products. This is a hands-on role requiring an advanced understanding of quality assurance processes, test development, and bringing best of class products to market. Additionally, the position works with new product development teams to support high-value engineering activities. The person in this role should be a strong communicator who is able to work effectively with peers and management alike in a high-paced global environment. We are looking for someone who is flexible and can respond quickly, energetically, and enthusiastically to changes. The Staff Firmware QA Engineer will report to the Senior Manager, and work alongside to grow and develop the firmware Quality Assurance team. The Staff Firmware QA Engineer will work closely with firmware, hardware, mobile apps teams, customer service, user testing and other cross-functional resources inside Juul Labs. We are looking for a highly motivated and talented individual who will be responsible for bringing best practices in quality assurance that will bring these hardware products to the next level.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Deep understanding of the existing test suite and how they assess the core functionality of the products
  • Cross-discipline collaboration to create test processes, test specifications, regression tests, and firmware release testing at all stages of firmware development
  • Record all test results for each test cycle and provide a high level summary for areas tested
  • Able to provide well-informed insights and guidance to other team members
  • Analyze root cause failure with close collaboration with the firmware team to provide detailed feedback on bug reporting
  • Creating bug reports in the issue tracking system and communicating findings to key cross-functional teams
  • Managing test coverage for new product requirements throughout the product development cycle
  • Define, develop and implement quality assurance test plans and test cases working closely with the quality/design assurance team
  • Demonstrates and is able to effectively apply deep technical knowledge in the firmware domain
  • Continuously looking for new ways to enhance test coverage to be more comprehensive
  • Act as a mentor to lower-level team members, and challenge them toward the best solution to the problem, drawing on a large body of experience
  • Participates in requirements gathering from other teams, and can help the project management team distill requirements into actionable tickets for the firmware team and identifies the appropriate test strategy for each
  • Is an attentive and participatory attendee of meetings, demonstrates good judgment, measured responses to conflict, and thoughtfulness in their interactions
  • Verifying all product requirements map to test specifications with clear traceability to our test cycle
  • Creates and maintains a strong cross-functional relationship with other departments. Is viewed as a trusted ally and point of contact for solutions to problems and can provide relevant, to-the-point insight into the constraints, capabilities, and nuances of firmware

PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience testing low-power, wireless embedded devices
  • Experience with Python, C, C++
  • Self-motivated, team player, with a strong desire to learn new skills and grow
  • Experience working with dev engineer to develop robust tests for new features and bug fixes
  • 8+ years working in a QA or firmware test related role
  • Experience working with Quality/Design Assurance groups
  • Forward thinking - Considers future impact of design decisions and strives to strike an appropriate balance between planning for the future and satisfying an immediate need
  • Ability to multitask, focus on detailed problems, and tenacity to drive issues until resolved
  • Experience testing mobile apps is preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Familiarity with BuildKite or other CI tools and Docker containers
  • Expert level ability to prioritize, scope, and own, but also delegate complex bodies of work to a team of QA engineers
  • Able to challenge design decisions with other teams, and advocate for the interests of the firmware team
  • Previous experience with medical devices or other regulated products is desirable
  • Strong knowledge of bug reporting and source control tools such as JIRA and Git
  • Experience with Test Management platforms and their respective integration tools (Zephyr, TestRail, etc)

EDUCATION:

  • Master's degree is a plus
  • Associates degree with significant experience will be considered
  • BS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related technical field

SALARY RANGES:
Salary varies by role, level and location, and is dependent on the cost of labor in a given
geographic region among other factors. These ranges may be modified at any time.
