Job Description
The Biology Department is seeking a full-time Sr. Research Specialist II who will investigate the genetic processes governing hearing regeneration. The primary duties and responsibilities of the employee will include using the zebrafish and mouse as model organisms, lab management, and conducting scientific research in Dr. Erin Jimenez's laboratory. The individual will work with the Principal Investigator (PI) to manage the laboratory and conduct experiments. Position is responsible for supervising 3 or more persons such as junior research technicians, postdoctoral and graduate researchers, undergraduate workers, and visiting researchers.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Lab Management Responsibilities include
Training of post-doctoral associates, graduate students, undergraduate students, visiting scientists, and interns; Re-training and/or maintenance of training for all lab personnel.
Overseeing research projects of undergraduate research students, high school interns, and visiting scientists.
Preparing and maintaining standard operating procedures (SOPs), maintaining an inventory of plasmids, antibodies, zebrafish, and mouse lines.
Ordering and maintaining lab supplies; Tracking purchases and maintaining purchase records and logs.
Upholding safety regulations and preparing for inspections.
Maintaining equipment service calls, contracts, and forms. Maintaining ABI Genetic Analyzer.
Scientific Researcher Responsibilities include
Generating CRISPR mutant zebrafish and transgenics, genotyping, and maintaining zebrafish lines.
Generating mouse transgenics, genotyping, and maintaining mouse lines.
Performing in situ hybridization, immunostaining, confocal microscopy.
Preparing stock solutions, buffers, media.
Generating recombinant DNA constructs.
Attending and presenting data in lab meetings.
Tracking laboratory-derived data and results; responsible for lab record keeping.
Working with the PI and other lab personnel to design, conduct, and analyze scientific experiments and to help with manuscript and grant preparation.
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of related technology, instruments, and equipment.
Ability to exercise professional judgement, excellent written and oral communication skills are desired.
Mastery with molecular biology techniques (recombinant DNA cloning) is desired.
Excellent organizational skills are required.
Physical Requirements
Occasionally lifts and/or carries objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
Occasionally stoops and bends.
Occasionally reaches and grasps with arms and hands above head.
Work involves possible exposure to malodorous vapors, toxic chemicals and acids, and presence of carcinogenic substances.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
Six year's experience in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques.
Additional education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's Degree, with related graduate research using the zebrafish model, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Master's Degree and 10+ years relevant zebrafish lab experience.

Starting Salary Range: Min $64,000 - Max $112,200 Annually ($62,780 budgeted; Commensurate with experience)

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
