Job Description
About Us
We're on a mission to make it possible for every person, team, and company to be able to tailor their software to solve any problem and take on any challenge. Computers may be our most powerful tools, but most of us can't build or modify the software we use on them every day. At Notion, we want to change this with focus, design, and craft.
We've been working on this together since 2016, and have customers like Pixar, Mitsubishi, Figma, Plaid, Match Group, and thousands more on this journey with us. Today, we're growing fast and excited for new teammates to join us who are the best at what they do. We're passionate about building a company as diverse and creative as the millions of people Notion reaches worldwide.
Notion is an in-person company, and currently requires its employees to come to the office for two Anchor Days (Mondays & Thursdays) and requests that employees spend the majority of their week in the office (including a third day).
About The Role
Millions of people use Notion — and this number is increasing every day. Our users depend on us to deliver a secure and trustworthy experience, and we value this more than anything. We want to keep building on that trust, while also continuing to amaze our users with the tools they can build in Notion. This is where you come in — to help us forge a strong, reliable path forward to the future.
As a Software Engineer with a focus on privacy, you will play a critical role in ensuring that Notion meets the highest standards of data privacy and security. You will work closely with our product and design teams to develop and implement privacy features and best practices across our platform.
If you're passionate about data privacy and enjoy designing creative approaches to provide effective privacy at scale, this could be just the opportunity you've been looking for.
What You'll Achieve
  • Write well-crafted, well-tested, readable, maintainable code while working at all levels of the stack
  • Build systems so users can exercise their privacy rights
  • Build systems to attach personal data annotations and tags to various data sets and redact personal data from data stores, logs, and APIs
  • Advocate for user privacy throughout the organization, consult engineering teams throughout the software development life-cycle and escalate potential privacy concerns
  • Develop and implement privacy features and best practices across our platform
  • Design, build and maintain systems that enhance privacy across the organization
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and prioritize privacy-related issues
Skills You'll Need To Bring
  • You can decompose tricky problems and work towards a clean solution, by yourself or with teammates. You're comfortable asking for help when you get stuck.
  • Strong understanding of data privacy laws, regulations, and industry best practices
  • You care about both the privacy and business impact and prioritize projects accordingly — you model threat risks and balance the right privacy investments with bottom line outcomes.
  • You communicate nuanced ideas regarding technical decisions clearly with engineering, legal and customer experience teams. In disagreements, you engage thoughtfully with other perspectives and compromise when needed.
  • You have 5+ years of engineering experience, ideally with the last several years with a focus on privacy and security.
Nice To Haves
  • You've managed, maintained, and utilized systems using technologies like Amazon Web Services, Datadog, Postgres, Redis, Memcached, and Elasticsearch. You have familiarity with distributed and highly available systems at scale.
  • You have made contributions to the security or privacy community (public research, blogging, presentations, etc.)
  • You've heard of computing pioneers like Ada Lovelace, Douglas Engelbart, Alan Kay, and others—and understand why we're big fans of their work.
  • You have interests outside of technology, such as in art, history, or social sciences.
  • You're proficient with any part of our technology stack: React, TypeScript, Node.js, Memcached, Postgres, Docker, and Elasticsearch.
  • You are data-driven. You know how to collect, analyze and use data to make privacy decisions.
We hire talented and passionate people from a variety of backgrounds because we want our global employee base to represent the wide diversity of our customers. If you’re excited about a role but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with every bullet point listed in the job description, we still encourage you to apply. If you’re a builder at heart, share our company values, and enthusiastic about making software toolmaking ubiquitous, we want to hear from you.
