Job Description

The ASU Bridging Success Program serves as a resource to educate the child welfare community about the Foster Youth Tuition Waiver and how they can support postsecondary aspirations and access for young people in foster care; and provide a holistic, trauma-informed approach to student support services that collaborate with the child welfare community to better ensure retention, persistence, and graduation rates for this particularly vulnerable student population.

The ASU Bridging Success Social Worker will provide ongoing case management to potential students and students participating in the Bridging Success program.

Essential Duties

  • Supports or serves as a classroom instructor for Bridging Success courses, including developing lesson content, leading activities, and grading assignments.
  • Assists with the development of materials related to outreach, education, and information related to the program.
  • Initiates and schedules visits with potential, incoming, and current Bridging Success students at ASU.
  • Collects, organizes, and analyzes data related to program.
  • Assists in the development of policies and procedures related to the program.
  • Assists in the development, coordination and facilitation of psycho-educational groups and social events throughout the semester.
  • Represents the ASU Bridging Success in the community and at community events.
  • Uses Canvas, PeopleSoft, Google Drive, Dropbox, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint software to perform regular duties of the position.
  • Provides outreach to potential and existing ASU students who are current or former foster youth.
  • Supervises or supports in the supervision of peer mentors, student workers, and/or interns.
  • Manages approximately 25 ongoing cases.
  • Assists with integrating and connecting students to University and College student support services into the Bridging Success program to support student retention.
  • Assists in the development and presentation of educational workshops and events for students and other staff.
  • Uses best-practice approaches with students in client engagement, interviewing, assessment, and case planning.
  • Other duties as assigned to support the needs of the program.
  • Managing caseload of 20-25 students; providing case management, coaching, and mentoring; conducting psychosocial assessments related to academic, financial, and social support needs; making referrals to ASU services (tutoring, disability resources, counseling, financial aid, student success, admissions); provide limited crisis counseling as needed.
  • Supports with other administrative program tasks.
  • Under the general direction of the Bridging Success Program Director the Social Worker will assist in the delivery of the Bridging Success Program.
  • Applies social work theory, practice approaches, and knowledge of research to cases and communicates their application to students.
  • Creates and prepares reports related to program.
  • Assists with organizing and making presentations to agencies regarding ASU and the Bridging Success Program; creates and distributes materials regarding the Bridging Success program to individuals, groups, families, and community agencies.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's or Bachelor's degree in Social Work, AND two years experience working in child protection OR, Any equivalent combination of expereince and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with grant-funded program development and evaluation.
  • Experience working with children and youth involved in the child welfare system
  • Experience working in college access programs or higher education

Working Environment

  • Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to: computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone and associated computer/technology peripherals.
  • Receives regular review of completed work activities to ensure adherence to established standards and objectives.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Activities are generally performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
