Distinguishing Features of the Class

Under immediate supervision, to perform semi skilled labor in connection with maintenance and construction of storm and sanitary sewers.

Acceptable Experience and Training

Any combination equivalent to completion of tenth grade, with some experience in sewer maintenance or construction work.

License or Other Requirements: A valid Iowa Class B CDL allowing the operation of vehicles with airbrakes.

Required Special Qualifications

SPECIAL NOTE: Civil Service employees who are currently employed in this classification and wish to transfer or who previously held this position and wish to take a voluntary demotion should notify the Human Resources Office of their interest prior to the application deadline.

Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)

• Cleans culverts, drains and ditches.
• Caulks joints with cement, corktight, hocum, rubber gaskets, etc.
• Breaks in sewer lines.
• Builds, repairs and maintains fences.
• Operates air hammers, pumps, compressors and similar equipment.
• Assists in constructing concrete forms for concrete manholes and spillways.
• Lays pipe and new sanitary and storm sewer lines.
• Clean sewers, using rods, slabs, and nozzles, rotating cutters and other devices.
• Backfill holes around pipe, manholes and inlets.
• Occasionally drives light trucks and performs related work as required.
• Digs ditches and trenches.
• Flushes sewers with high-pressure hoses.
• Cleans catchbasins with adapter.
• Tamps fill.
