Job Description
Ars Technica’s mission is to provide the greatest insight into what’s at stake in technology today, through a comprehensive understanding of all the facets that surround and contribute to it.
Location:
New York, NY
Ars Technica seeks a Space Reporter with expertise in spaceflight, including launch, in-space activities, space policy, astronomy, commercial space, human spaceflight, NASA, regulatory issues, international developments, and other activities in the rapidly expanding field.
The Space Reporter will report to the Senior Space Editor and produce daily content including informed news and analysis, as well as features and the kind of in-depth explanatory articles that Ars Technica is known for.
We are looking for a strong writer who can not only understand the changing world of spaceflight today, but identify what is really happening beneath the press releases and hype, and write fairly and boldly about these trends. A successful applicant should be able to write clean and compelling prose accessible to readers from a wide variety of technical backgrounds—and who can serve all of those readers well with analysis. This is a union position.
The Space Reporter will have subject matter expertise in one or more of the following areas:
  • International space technologies and launches
  • Government space policy
  • Robotic/autonomous spaceflight
  • Private space launch companies
  • NASA
  • Human spaceflight
  • Geophysics
  • Megaconstellations
  • Astronomy
  • Weather science
In addition to daily news coverage, the Space Reporter will also write occasional long-form pieces on matters of expertise. This is an exempt, guild-represented position, with benefits.
Responsibilities:
  • Write occasionally on ad hoc topics, as assigned
  • Help guide Ars space coverage
  • Engage with comments on Ars space stories
  • Take photographs and edit images as appropriate for coverage
  • This role may occasionally engage in editing
  • Write occasional feature-length articles on in-depth topics as assigned
  • Regularly and contributing to the Rocket Report newsletter
  • Work with editors and staff to generate story ideas
  • Participate actively in team collaboration and project management tools and processes as necessary
  • Travel as required
  • Write regularly on space-related topics as directed by the Senior Space Editor
  • Additional duties as required, or as assigned by manager
  • Generate headlines in accordance with news practices
  • Integrate feedback from editors on writing quality
Qualifications:
  • Capable of multitasking in a fast-paced environment
  • Attention to detail and exceptional organizational skills
  • Critical thinking ability
  • Willingness to work some early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays, as projects may require
  • 2-3 years of demonstrated writing and research in subject matter expertise
  • Strong interpersonal skills, a collaborative team player and dedicated individual contributor
  • Base Pay Range: $65,000 - $100,000
  • Good time management and self-starting ability
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Timeliness and dependability for multiple projects and competing assignments.
