The Senior Research Scientist, Front of Funnel Innovation is responsible for leading, coordinating and executing of horizon 2 product development efforts for Innovation across all Campbell’s Snacks brands, focusing on new cookie and cracker recipe and process development. This includes early-stage consumer centric co-development processes, new products & platforms recipe design, new ingredient, and strategic commercialization planning.
This position will be located in Camden, New Jersey.
The Senior Research Scientist, Front of Funnel position is a hands-on individual contributor position that will lead early-stage product ideation, co-creation and co-design programs with consumers, manage shared technical resources, respond resourcefully to new demands and challenges throughout the product & commercialization process (including bench, pilot plant, and plant trials to create prototypes for consumer testing, etc.) to support business growth.
The Senior Research Scientist is expected to possess and demonstrate a solid understanding of new product development, food science, the business, operations and the commercialization processes. The approach should be driven by experimentation, including the creative application and modification of existing products / new technologies or the identification of new and unique products which achieve business goals.
In addition, the position will include the ability to provide technical specifications and support to assure smooth rollouts of new products and processes during plant startups. This includes the provision of comprehensive documentation to enable commercialization and training of plant personnel. The Senior Research Scientist must support an environment that fosters innovation and calculated risk taking.
The successful candidate must demonstrate a creativity, resilience, a passion for developing new food experiences, strong interpersonal skills and the ability to influence decisions within the cross functional team (Marketing Innovation, Marketing Research, Operations, Engineering, Manufacturing, QA, Sensory, Culinary, Packaging…) and externally with partners such as ingredient vendors.
Essential responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
  • Conducting and leading assessment and capability studies, product startups / early stage commercialization and provides on-site support to Plant Operations for new products.
  • Identification, assessment and validation of formulations from bench-top through commercialization. This includes familiarity managing the financial aspects of the product development process including formula costing and modeling.
  • Independently directing the activities of outside vendors including ingredients and services.
  • Creating, designing, supervising the development of new experimental protocols.
  • Fostering an innovation culture in Campbell Snacks by continually introducing new ideas and product concepts.
  • Supporting innovation design processes and concurrent consumer research.
  • Ensuring all proper documentation is accurate, on schedule and that objectives, budget and timetables are met.
  • Champion the development and creation of new product/platform ideas and translation into viable commercial prototypes that support the build of the new product pipeline
Job Complexity:
  • Understanding in areas beyond Product Development including Consumer Trends, Design Thinking, Process and Package Development, QA, Project Engineering and Marketing needs and financial hurdles.
  • Sustain a high level of competence and professionalism in a dynamic business environment.
  • Must be a good problem solver; able to identify, interpret and analyze the correct data, and provide detailed direction to development projects.
  • Demonstrate creative solutions and the ability to influence stakeholders in the new product development process, contributing to the development of new product concepts, prototypes, platforms and application of new technologies
  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively with Senior Management as well as Plant Management.
  • Ability to handle project ambiguity and work with minimal direction and guidance
  • Easily adapts to changing priorities.
We're looking for the following abilities and skills:
  • Anticipated travel of up to 40%.
  • Bachelor of Science degree with a concentration in Food Science, Food Process Engineering, or Chemical Engineering (Master's degree is preferred).
  • Passion for food science, product development and consumers as it relates to innovation for new products, line extensions, and productivity opportunities.
  • Experience with baking cookie & cracker unit operations is preferred, co-manufacturing experience is a plus.
  • Ability to handle and lead multiple projects at any given time in a team environment.
  • Creative thinker with a passion for consumer co-design and early-stage product development.
  • Product Development, preferably someone who has successfully commercialized baked, cookie or cracker products in the market.
  • Excellent analytical skills, strong attention to details, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • 4 - 8+ years of related experience with a consumer-packaged goods background
  • Ability to think beyond his or her own (R&D) function to consider the organization holistically.
  • Empathy for the consumer, basic understanding of disruptive innovation and desire to create new products to solve problems.
Relocation is Available for this role!

Compensation and Benefits:
The base salary range for this full-time, salaried position is between
$85,900.00 - $158,900.00
Individual base pay depends on work location and additional factors such as experience, job-related skills, and relevant education or training. Total pay may include other forms of compensation. In addition, we offer competitive health, dental, 401k and wellness benefits beginning on the first day of employment.
