Duke Learning Innovation seeks to transform Duke into a powerhouse for lifetime innovative education. In our vision, Duke will become the source of influence at the local, national, and global level for innovative learning at every stage of a learner’s journey: from pre-K through gray. Reporting to the Vice Provost for Learning Innovation and Digital Education, the Sr. Director of Marketing and Communications develops the strategy and overseas the teams that drive the promotion of Duke’s lifetime learning programs and products as well as the Learning Innovation internal and external brand. The successful candidate will be a thought leader for marketing and communications strategy for the lifetime education and learning innovation domain with a keen awareness of digital-first marketing trends and technologies, a reputation for generating ROI through marketing, and a demonstrated passion for learner success through the eliminate gaps in communication throughout the continuous learner lifecycle.
Responsibilities
Marketing strategy and leadership (30%)
- Works with Duke partners (school leadership, administration, etc.) to ensure value and maximize opportunities to grow revenue and generate new enrollments.
- Builds partner trust and team reliability with a well-managed operational workflow that minimizes confusion as the team grows, streamlines tasks, and increases team agility and overall efficiency.
- Creates and promotes brand awareness, through brand identity and strategies such as interactive content development and visual marketing.
- In support of the Vice Provost for Learning Innovation’s strategic priorities, leads all digital and traditional marketing and communications efforts for the division.
- Sets KPIs and metrics for marketing performance and periodically reports on these metrics. Promotes a culture of continuous improvement by reporting on the effectiveness of marketing and communications activities.
Marketing infrastructure (20%)
- Leads the strategy and development for an e-commerce website that promotes all of Duke’s lifetime learning offerings and provides learners with seamless opportunities for continual connection to new learning experiences.
- Lead Duke Learning Innovation’s current and future CRM/digital experience strategy. Plays a critical role in the institution-wide enterprise CRM strategy.
Public relations and communications (20%)
- Interacts on a regular basis with: Duke executive management and leadership, external agencies, external vendors, communications staff, faculty, administrators, and other stakeholders.
- Oversees internal (between Duke entities) and external communications.
- Leads executive communications for the Vice Provost’s Office
Grow and manage a marketing team (20%)
- Manages and oversees the marketing and comms budget.
- Hires, manages, and mentors a new and growing team of marketing and communications staff.
Partner and external relations (10%)
- May engage with Duke development teams and staff, especially in Duke Alumni Affairs and Development to collaborate on external and alumni events and marketing efforts as they relate to Learning Innovation’s lifetime learning mission and goals.
- Engages with industry and other external partners.
- Be a thought leader of the domain and publish or present nationally and/or internationally.
- Manage the work and relationships of marketing, web design, and market analysis agencies and other current and future third-party contracts.

Education
Graduate degree in Marketing, Digital Marketing or Marketing and Communications and/or Bachelor’s and comparable experience.
Experience
Required
10 years experience in a marketing or marketing related position in industry or academia.
Preferred Job Qualifications
- Keen awareness of adult and working learners
- Proven success driving increases in revenue and/or learner growth.
- Digital-first marketing experience
- Proven experience implementing strategy to leverage platforms and technologies (CRMs, etc.) to close gaps and yield consistency across programs.
- Customer/learner experience design
- Awareness and understanding of trends in digital learning (stackability; microcredentials; etc).
