Scientist -Virology Upstream Process Development

This is a full- time, salaried, position: Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.


The Virology Scientist – Upstream Process Development performs independently and productively as an Upstream Development Scientist and actively engages in process and product development within a dynamic project team. The Virology Scientist – Upstream Process Development displays strong technical knowledge, initiative, and scientific commitment and makes significant scientific and technical contributions within the Process Development Group.


The Role:


  • Develops and executes large-scale productions and harvest protocols. Utilizes technical knowledge to scale up to manufacturing scales.
  • Interacts and collaborates with clients regarding the Upstream activities of the program, including the design and execution of the experiments, analysis, and presentation of the experimental results.
  • Leads client projects starting from the development and optimization toward cGMP manufacturing for clinical trials, registration, or improvements of existing processes and products.
  • Assists MS&T in preparing the documents for transferring the production processes from PD to cGMP manufacturing. Provide technical support in engineering and GMPs runs.
  • Expands the technical capabilities of the Process Development group by offering expertise in areas such as technology development, platform, or systems development, or using a literature precedent.
  • Acts as subject matter expert in Upstream Process Development of biologics including, but not limited to vaccines, viral vectors, and recombinant proteins.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Designs and executes the experiments to develop and improve scalable virus and protein production processes utilizing different expression systems focusing on mammalian and insect cell cultures.


The Candidate:
  • Upstream process development experience specific to protein/VLP/viral vector production (AAV, lentivirus) and understanding of protein biochemistry (protein folding, protein degradation, aggregation, etc.) and experience in optimization of protein expression.
  • General analytical methods applicable for proteins (SDS PAGE electrophoresis, western immunoblotting, plaque assay, etc.).
  • Experience working with HSV, lenti- and retroviruses, and/or adenoviruses including primary recovery of viruses from production cultures and with harvest systems – centrifugation, filtration (depth, sterile, tangential flow).
  • The ability to work in a team-oriented environment is essential, as this person will work closely with MS&T and Operations and should be able to lead a group of associate scientists to complete the projects successfully.
  • Production of material at different scales using various platforms from flasks to stirred tanks and packed bed bioreactors.
  • Ph.D. – 0-3 years; MS – 3-6 years; BS - 6-9 years
  • Uphold the EHS requirements of this position.
  • Degree field in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Chemistry, or Life Science field
  • Virus production methods and approaches including isolation, propagation, expansion, and optimization of virus infection kinetics.
