Job Description

Position Summary:

The Léman Manhattan Residential Life Program is now seeking part-time Residential Assistants (RA). Residential Assistants work with our full-time Residential Counselors (Dorm Parents) to maintain a safe, healthy, and engaging residential atmosphere for our students. Developing strong relationships with our students, grounded in compassion, mutual respect, and consistency is essential to the Residential Assistant position. Residential Assistants must be willing to take a proactive and hands-on approach toward working with students to solve problems and conflicts, and to offer academic, disciplinary, and moral guidance as needed.

Specific duties and responsibilities include assisting Residential Counselors with the following:

  • Ensuring that the work environment at the dormitory is professional, safe, and efficient
  • Acting in loco parentis for boarding students, and are therefore responsible for all aspects of the residential welfare of the students
  • Responding to residential life emergencies when necessary
  • Other duties as assigned and as needed to support the operations of the residential life program and the school
  • Assisting with and/or chaperoning residential activities and events
  • Addressing student conduct issues, rule violations, and safety concerns through appropriate channels
  • Supervising the student lounge in the evenings and weekends
  • Monitoring student whereabouts and facilitating student checkouts

The Residential Assistant is a flexible, hourly position. Shifts are typically available on Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00 - 8:00 PM or 3:00 - 11:00 PM. Interested applicants must be able to work at least one of these time slots, either every week or every other week. Additional shifts outside of the typical shift hours will be filled as needed.

Skills, Qualifications & Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Minimum 1 year working with adolescents in a leadership or mentorship capacity
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Willingness to perform tasks as needed
  • A demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations
  • Willingness and ability to work nights, weekends, and select holidays
  • Excellent critical thinking skills and the ability to problem solve both independently and collaboratively
  • Ability to engage and connect with high school students
  • The ability to maintain composure during stressful situations
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Maturity and the understanding of appropriate boundaries while working with students

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • General knowledge of New York City
  • Proficiency in a second language
  • Experience in residential life at a boarding school, summer camp, or similar work environment
  • Experience working with English as a Second Language students
  • Experience leading teenage students on excursions
  • International experience living or working abroad

Work Environment

  • Travel may be required when chaperoning school trips
  • Work is typically performed in an office environment with intermittent sitting, standing, or walking in various settings
  • Occasionally move items weighing up to 50 pounds
