Position Summary
The Research Lab Manager will support a team of Principal Investigators (PI) in the Department of Ophthalmology by managing and supervising the operational activities of the research labs to ensure that all projects are running smoothly and on time. The scope of duties includes but is not limited to facility planning and maintenance, inventory control, purchasing and maintenance of laboratory equipment, fiscal and administrative services, monitoring environmental risks, and quality control within the labs. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge scientific discoveries and foster a collaborative and productive research environment.
Responsibilities
Equipment Maintenance and Servicing:
Develop and implement a comprehensive maintenance schedule for all shared laboratory equipment.
Coordinate with equipment vendors and service providers to ensure timely servicing, repairs, and calibration of instruments to maintain their optimal performance.
Troubleshoot equipment issues and liaise with researchers and external technicians for effective problem resolution.
Keep detailed records of equipment maintenance, service history, and related documentation.
Inventory Management:
Oversee the inventory of shared supplies and consumables in the laboratory.
Regularly monitor stock levels, place orders, and receive deliveries to ensure the availability of necessary shared materials for ongoing research projects.
Collaborate with researchers to anticipate future supply needs and optimize inventory utilization while adhering to budgetary guidelines.
Compliance and Safety:
Stay updated on all relevant laboratory safety protocols, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and regulatory requirements.
Ensure that all researchers and lab personnel adhere to established protocols and maintain a safe working environment.
Conduct periodic safety inspections and address any potential hazards or non-compliant practices promptly.
Prepare the lab for audits, inspections, and ensure compliance with institutional and regulatory guidelines.
Research Support:
Ensure that researchers have access to the required equipment and rooms at designated times, resolving scheduling conflicts when necessary.
Foster a collaborative and supportive environment to encourage teamwork and effective communication among lab members.
Manage the scheduling and booking of shared laboratory equipment and conference rooms to optimize their utilization.
Administrative Duties:
Work closely with EVS to maintain a clean and organized laboratory environment. Report and address any maintenance or cleanliness issues promptly to maintain a safe and pleasant working space.
Support the lab and PIs with general administrative support, including processing of travel reimbursements.
Assist with other administrative support for the research division including support for departmental meetings, conferences, grand rounds, and other relevant research events.
Perform other tasks as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus four years of experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Excellent organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.
Effective communication and interpersonal abilities to collaborate with researchers and external vendors.
Computer proficiency and experience with Excel.
Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
Prior experience in laboratory management, preferably in a basic science research setting.
Strong understanding of laboratory equipment and its maintenance requirements.
Familiarity with safety protocols, SOPs, and regulatory compliance in a research laboratory.
Prior grants management and lab management experience.
