Research Internships at Microsoft provide a dynamic environment for research careers with a network of world-class research labs led by globally-recognized scientists and engineers. The Privacy in AI group at Microsoft Research has multiple research internship positions for the summer of 2023. We are seeking strong candidates to work with our researchers on various topics of Privacy-Preserving Machine Learning and Federated Learning.
Some of the topics of interest covering research areas in PPML and FL are:

• Genetic algorithms for federated learning.
• Multi-party data collaboration,
• Adversarial robustness in federated learning,
• Privacy mitigations in machine learning, such as differentially private training,
• Hierarchical training,
• Privacy and/or fairness in federated learning,
• Privacy attacks/metrics, including membership inference, poisoning attacks, and reconstruction attacks,
• Causal federated Learning,
• Federated optimization,

We encourage all PhD students with relevant technical background in any of these topics to apply as soon as possible, as we will start interviewing immediately.
Responsibilities
Interns put inquiry and theory into practice. Alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world’s best researchers, interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. Interns not only advance their own careers, but they also contribute to exciting research and development strides. During the 12-week internship, students are paired with mentors and expected to collaborate with other interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community. Research internships are available in all areas of research, and are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer.

In addition to the qualifications below, you’ll need to submit a minimum of two reference letters for this position. • Must be currently enrolled in a PhD program in Computer Science or a related STEM field.

Interns are expected to be physically located in their manager’s Microsoft worksite location for the duration of their internship.
Preferred Qualifications

• Research experience in the areas of privacy, machine learning, federated learning, distributed computing, or natural language processing.
• Hands-on development experience with Python and ML frameworks such as pytorch.

The base pay range for this internship is USD $5,090 - $10,120 per month. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $6,690 - $11,030 per month.
